Key West Fishing Report January 9th 2011

Cobia Fishing Key West

Cobia Have Invaded Key West

What a week here fishing in Key West!

The weather as we all know was looking pretty grim and seemingly setting up for an incredibly cold winter. Well, so far we have missed it here in Key West. The weather has been absolutely fantastic.

All arenas of fishing are experiencing incredible days on the water for fishing in Key West. Fishing guides and charters have been reporting ‘off the chain” fishing reports with catches of all seasons of fish here in January.

Inshore on the flats fishing scene and backcountry we have the tarpon fishing get really good with catches of many fish here at Dream Catcher Charters in the 40 – 80lb range. Permit have been tailing the flats – Capt. Kyle said on saturday he saw many fish on the edge of a bank that his anglers beat in the heads with crabs. Tailing as in – tails all the way out of the water, like little flags on the flats saying “come get me”. What a thing to see.  Barracuda fishing has been the other story with fish in the 20 plus range being caught right up on the flats with top water plugs and light tackle. Add that to our sharks, trout, bluefish, and other great species we have an incredible fishing report for Key West inshore flats and backcountry.

Wreck and Reef fishing report here in Key West has to bee what people write books about. The fishing is mad. Last few days I have been out to the West of Key West I have found gaggles of cobia with one trip of 4 catching as many as 12 fish with the largest in the 50 lb range. having anglers go home with 60lbs of cobia on a two fish bag limit is not a hard thing to do right now. Out on the patch reefs the grouper as still chewing seemingly knowing that this is out of season for them till April. We released some nice reds and blacks on Jigs and artificial. The Reef fishing report is, well, EPIC!!! Tuna, Dolphin, Sailfish, Kingfish…. OH MY!… They are al here kids and ready to play. Many dolphin were caught last week up and down the Florida Keys and into Key West. Truly amazing and we are not talking small fish either. A few days ago an angler of mine hooked up several 15 + pound dolphin with a nice 40 to boot. Mostly cows, I did not see any bulls, but fun non the less. Kingifishing has been what it always is this time of the year – pleanty and big. We had a few fish over 30 on live bait to the west of Key West on 12 lb test. lots of fun and lots of hot fishing action.

January is not sold out here at Dream Catcher Charters for Key West Fishing at it’s finest. We are running our Yellowfin bay boats and the 32 ft Intense all through the month during this fine fishing weather here in Key West.
