Wreck and Reef Report
Had a busy week last week working on the Grouper and snapper.. Along with them came some decent cobia shots as well on the shallower wrecks West of the Marquesas and into the Gulf of Mexico.
The cobia is a big draw this time of the year for many of my anglers as we have done so well on them in the years past. This year its a bit different with the warmer winter we have only seen handful of fish to sight cast to. Not to fret.. Old many winter is brewing up a good cold front for us to Chill things out a bit this week so the Cobia should be up and eating.
The Grouper and Snapper. We have been crushing the grouper all the way up to the 1st of 2012. The Atlantic Grouper season ends this week “today” as a matter of fact and now it is up to the Gulf of Mexico to produce those tasty fish. Again not to worry.. The Snapper fishing is contagious and spreading all over the shallows of the Atlantic. We have been catching mutton snappers up to 18 lbs. with some nice Mangrove and Yellowtail snappers as well.
The reef bite has gone hot and cold last few days. Not enough weather in my opinion. We need a front,, Desperately. Cold weather turns it on here in Key West. Some nice Kingfish have been reported here in the last few days. My focus toward the next week is to start pinning those fish down and seeing where they will be stacking up. This next cold front will bring a good chill to the Keys on Wednesday the 3rd and we will be GAME ON for Kingfish.. just in time for the Hogs breath SKA tournament. Held in the latter part of January 2012.
Sail fishing has been hot and cold. Look for the next front to improve this along with the Tuna bite as well. Cold winds out of the East make sailfish love it. Remember.. North and North East winds here in keyWest mean Sails and Tuna.. South East means Dolphin. Either way you win..
