Key West Tarpon Report February 26th

Hi Gang.. The Tarpon are still here. and So are the anglers and fishing guides that fish for them.

Its hectic out there in the harbor with fishing guides all over the place for tarpon fishing here in Key West. We have our regulars and thats the norm, all great guys – BUT – there is an influx of new fishing guides that frankly just don’t get it. Seems that the PTTS (Professional Tarpon Torture Serries) on Versus or ESPN or what every careless network is teaching fishermen and wanna be tarpon fishing guides that its ok to go sniffing another guys ass to get on the bite. Its gonna get ugly. Plus the way they handle fish on that show is a crime!

The weather – A wind front came through today as I write, promising winds through thursday out of the east. Our water temps in the back country yesterday were in the 80’s.. Unseasonably warm, good for early tarpon however bad for normal tarpon season.

The bite has been good for both the chumers and the live bait guys. Fly fishing is not quite solid yet.

Live bait is always the harder way to catch a tarpon, as it requires a different and more challenging skill set that live bait guys have, We drift allot, at least till the chum gys show up then we move out to more distant locations to make it happen for our people where the chum guys don’t go. Actually out of sight of Key West and its cruise ships.

The Chumers have been doing well just sitting in one spot for a whole tide change and stinking the place up bringing the fish behind the boat. Kind of boring if you ask me but, hey, it works and I won’t knock it. We put many anglers on with chum boats and are happy to do it. Here at Dream Catchers We just don’t chum and never will.

Some artificial jumps have been made that I have heard of and some laid up fish have been found so far.

Fly fishing for tarpon is minimal this week but the fly guys are tight lipped I know they have seen some tarpon in some distant corners that they work. I don’t recommend this time of the year to book a fly fishing trip for tarpon but, some sinking lines work well in the deeper spots with some patience. Just ask us for an up to the minute report.

I am putting myself back out there this week for a full schedule and will get it all unlocked shortly. I will keep you posted..

We offer all facets of tarpon fishing with REAL tarpon fishing guides that have been trained by the best or ARE the best in the area. Call my office if you want to learn about what we have to offer. There is a ton of crap out there.. Call Us. 1-888-362-3474 or 305 -304-0497. LETS FISH!
