Tarpon Report And Forecast

February 21 2013 – Tarpon season seems to making a soft start.

With unseasonably warmer weather the tarpon have shown up in the harbor and some of the adjacent channels in the backcountry offering our fishing clients the shot at early tarpon here in Key West. The last few weeks have provided an unstable yet fun fishery for tarpon.

With the very warm weather last week the fish showed up in force and many were boated on our 4 hour trips with anglers wishing to dedicate their time to a shot at a bout with the Silver King.

With a fresh ESE wind today reports of tarpon “rolling everywhere” and not being boat shy at all. However feeding them this morning was tough during the meager incoming tide with only one tarpon jumped for three boats trying in the time of an hour of two during the early session.

The tarpon here now are running in size from 40 – 90 lbs. Live bait techniques are working well on the better moving tides as the fish are laying deep. Each hit has been a memorable surprise for our anglers as the tarpon are here in numbers but infrequent in their rolls.

The forecast for next few days is the same Easterly winds will keep our temps up and the afternoons look favorable tide – wise for the best shot for tarpon through next Tuesday the 26th of February. After that, all bets are off as we have another winter blast coming in to cool us off with Northerly winds that will surely put the fish down Wednesday and Thursday..

Look for our next report by next week and I will keep you up to speed with whats happening and what to expect for Key West tarpon fishing with Dream Catcher Charters..
