July Brings Soggy Summer Fishing

Gonna Get a little breezy..

The Fourth of July weekend is a drippy one here in Key West. Inconsistent showers and windy conditions prevail across the Florida Keys and Key West.

Here at Dream Catcher Charters we have been pretty much sold out every day and with that there has been a lot of ducking and diving in and around storms trying to get people to some fish that wanted to brave the less than consistent weather with us and make a go of it. Some trips have been super successful and some just super. Others just played it safe and stayed on the dock.

Tarpon are still around Key West but the bulk of the migration has slowed to a trickle on the beaches. This time of the year we look for laid up fish on the greener grass areas in 3-4 ft and there are many fish still held up in the channels and the harbors. With the less the ideal conditions for sight fishing in the last week we have had little in the way of bonefish and permit. But the tarpon have been holding up well.

Barracudas, jacks and Large mangrove snappers have been the game these days for people who get underway with us and make a go of it. Great rod bending action in the lower light with the barracudas on light tackle plug fishing on the flats. No deciding they just eat and its a blast. The mangrove snappers are on the spawn right now and getting big and numerous. Snappers in the 4 – 6 lb range have been caught on the shallower patch reefs making not only a great fight but also a great meal…

The Shark fishing has also been very good. with the lower light the sharks have no fear not being able to see the boats.. So, they eat right in front of you in the super shallow waters we fish in. Big bulls up to 190 lbs have been common..

Forecast.. Well it looks like the rains will let up. but the winds are scheduled to keep up through the next Wednesday. Then by Friday we should be back to a 5-10 mph thing.

Here at Dream Catcher Charters we specialize in all facets of inshore and near shore fishing.. Tarpon, sharks, rod bending, snorkeling and fishing trips.
