Key West Fishing Report
Permit fishing in Key West is awesome.. Try your luck on one of these unpredictable fish.
December 2nd 2013 – Fishing report for Deep Sea, Backcountry, Flats and Reef by Capt. Steven Lamp of Dream Catcher Charters.
The winds of November seem to have subsided, For now.. Its December and a whole new month has started but the same games continue.
Deep Sea Fishing
Outside the reef the action is persistent. With the cool Northerly flow the sailfish have hit and stayed early this year providing many of our clients with a strong chance of catching one or 5 on the deep sea boats we have in our stable. Along with a strong sailfish bite we have also had some good blacken tuna action with a few kingfish also showing up early and the occasional wahoo as well. Lots of bonita and cero mackerel to be had to bend rods and show people some fun.
Speaking to one of our deep sea captains he is expecting the bite to continue strong as the Jet Steam lifted a bit this week keeping the hard core cold fronts off our porch and a moderate wind flow from the high pressure that has installed on the eastern seaboard. Look for the next full moon for a great shot at some Wahoo.. Blackfin tuna bite will remain and the reef will be loaded. A great time to do some deep sea fishing here in Key West.
Backcountry / Flats Fishing
Its no hold barred for the backcountry anglers here in Key West. The trout bite has been EPIC in the words of Capt. Tommy Z of Dream Catcher Charters. Water temps have been a roller coaster with lows in the 60’s and highs in the mid 70’s out back. This offers us as anglers and guides the chance to fish the best of both worlds.. The warmer days we have amazing flats fishing with permit on the flats along with shallow water barracudas and jacks. On the cooler days our captains have been into the redfish and trout with mixes of pompano, snappers, jacks, bluefish and lots of hard pulling fun species.
Coming up things will only get better (if that were possible). All the action above will continue with a push of cobia on the flats when it finally turns full on winter here in Key West and the water temps stay in the high 60’s. Whats nice is that we are able to run and still catch people some fish even when its howling winds and the folks are still having a great time.
Reef fishing for mutton snappers and yellowtails has been very good.
The reef has been on fire with some awesome yellowtail action. In my last few trips out to the reef my angler have managed to catch a limit of yellowtail snappers with using just plugs and no bait. The mutton snappers have been up on the reef in the shallows crushing the ballyhoo that are seemingly everywhere. Cero Mackerel are going nuts eating the little baits as well. We have almost broken the all tackle IGFA work record a few times in the last two weeks on Cero Mackerel of 17.2 lbs with fish just shy of that at 16lbs. Thats a HUGE cero.
The Wrecks are not yet holding cobia constantly yet but I think that is just a matter of weeks. The permit are still around and eating well. I will be out there again tomorrow to check it out and a full report will be in our Facebook page where we make daily updates complete with photos. .
The All In ONE day of fishing is an awesome way to experience a little bit of everything we have to offer here in Key West. Fish the flats, backcountry, wrecks and reefs with us on a full day and go home wore out and tired.
