February 8th 2014 – Is it tarpon fishing time in Key West yet? NO – well YES. umm I mean NO>. Well what I mean is we have tarpon here and yes they are eating well and yes again we are catching them here with our anglers at Dream Catcher Charters.. But… NO its not tarpon season..

Tarpon and Capt. Steven Lamp

Capt. Steven Lamp holds up a nice Key West winter tarpon.

Let Me Explain..

Sometimes in the early winter here in Key West we get a warming trend that really warms us up. The gulf tarpon consider this a sign that says Free Beer and all the bait you can eat. They rush in and clog up our Key West harbor looking for food in the warmer waters. Our water temps just yesterday were up to 77 degrees. Thats about 8 degrees warmer than normal. So what we get it a group of fish that think summer is on its way.

We are expecting these conditions to continue through the period of next week till the next front that is scheduled to come through on Thursday. This probably will not kill the bite but will definitly slow it down. The extended forecast has us back into the warm weather the following week and things are going to be perfect for more winter tarpon..

Its Still Not Tarpon Season

Many people read my reports here and call us to book a fishing charter. If we have room in our schedule we will certainly get you out with us or one of our colleagues. The fun is there to be had.. BUT.. we will not book a trip based on the tarpon being here and we are catching them just yet. Please keep that in mind..

The weather has given us a real treat here these last two weeks and the fish are doing very well. Give us a call and lets see if your day has a February tarpon surprise.
