Tarpon Fishing Report For Key West
May 14th 2014 — Key West tarpon fishing report and forecast. By Capt. Steven Lamp of Dream Catcher Charters
Trick or treat? Hard to say. May has been full of tricks and the fun never ends. With 20 to occasional 30 mph hour winds for the last week and an additional week of windy torture this has been a tarpon season for the books. We will reflect back on this as the “windy May”.
In the last week I won’t say that the tarpon fishing bite has been tough. In fact the reward for going out in the gale is the fact that you are going to hook up on a fish if your fishing guide doesn’t suck. The trick to our success here at Dream Catcher Charters is that we move around allot and we have 6 boats on the water every minute of the day this time of the year. We are always communicating, tracking fish and behaviors as well as timing tide flows to keep all of our clients in the fish.
We have been averaging a fish to the boat on every trip here. I have been working the flats tarpon and doing very well. With the windier conditions I don’t believe the tarpon are as picky and they seem to eat pretty well. My staple bait of choice this week has been the Hogy 7″ original. with various weight techniques we are able to keep the bait swimming high or down and dirty depending on what the tarpon seem to want. Check out the Hogy Lures web site and chose what will work for you. I prefer the 2X Barbarian Strong Swim bait and jig heads.
With the full moon of May the next few days I expect the bite to remain consistent. I believe the flow of fish has been good. Many guides I have spoken with have said they thought it was meager. Keep in mind the water is pretty banged up and the windier conditions keep the fish down so we probably don’t see them as well leading some to believe there is fewer fish.
Next week looks to be windy again till about the 20th of May where my forecast period ends. The Northerly winds over the weekend will have a light affect on the tarpon fishing but nothing drastic.
