Labor Day Weekend Report

August 30th 2014 – Labor Day weekend in Key West. Looks like the weather is going to hold out for an amazing Key West 3 day holiday weekend right on into next week after the last of the crowds are gone.

The fishing guides here at Dream Catcher Charters have been enjoying the best of the best in Key West fishing this last week as it was the slowest week of the season so far. We were booked up but everyone else seemed to be at the dock so the fishing was very nice with no crowds..

The winds will be an issue this holiday weekend so if you get sea sick stay in the backcountry waters or on the flats. No point in being uncomfortable. Plenty of fish to be had in the backcountry.

Deep Sea fishing

Reports have been relatively slow for the exception of the last few days with some nice dolphin caught on board the Triple Time here out of Key West. Most days though its the same ol standard of the dog days of summer where we have smaller dolphin so the offshore deep sea boats are playing around the reef and doing some deep dropping to make a box of filets.

On the Reef and Wrecks

Good amber jack and shark fishing around the reefs and wrecks but not many trophy fish to be had right now.some nice catches of Yellowtail and grouper with a mutton snapper thrown in. Again its gonna be a bit sporty out there till the winds drop. 15-20 means 2-4 and 3-5 ft seas depending on where you go.

Flats Fishing

Has been very good for as hot as it is. With the top of the day super high tides the water temps are being managed and kept nice and cool. Great flow has got the flats fishing species such as permit and bonefish up on the flats and ready to feed. With the higher winds the 90 + degree heat does not make a matter as you stalk the flats and get your shots.

Backcountry fishing

Just in today.. Capt. Brian and Capt. Tommy are reporting some nice catches of Trout in the backcountry here in Key West. Pretty early for those species of fish to be here but fun none the less. Mixed in with the trout are some jacks and blue runners big barracudas and sharks.. Fun times on light tackle.. Remember on our backcountry fishing charters you can fish for anything on the flats too.

Tarpon fishing is a big part of backcountry fishing. Take a look at our Tarpon Fishing Reports.
