November 3rd 2014 – The first cold front of the season for Key West ushers in a whole new list of species to fish for here out of Key West.

Cooler water temps with copious amounts of mullet, pilchards and mahua are the ingredients needed to boost our species count here out of Key West for fishing in the backcountry waters. Today we have reported water temps in the mid 60’s here just out of Key West. Quite a spike compared to the balmy 78 degrees just a few days ago. Mackerel, jacks, trout and pompano have moved in along with blue runners and some smaller blue fish making the fishing and rod bending lots of fun..

The cooler temps also bring out the best in our patch reef fishing as well. Snapper, grouper and mackeral come into the shallow cooler waters to hit the baits that are all over the surface.

The flats fishing will be shut down for a couple days till the fish get acclimated to the cooler temps. When the water spikes cold like this, its almost a promise bonefish will be scarce if around at all. Barracudas on the flats will go lathargic in the big temp changes but the permit don’t seem to mind and adjust quicker than most. I suspect that the end of this week will hold some better flats fishing than right now.

It seems we are going to have cold fronts ushered in one at a time through the forecast duration. Keeping temps down in the 60’s and 70’s. As locals we love it and the fish will get used to it. I personally prefer the line in the sand on seasonal changes in stead of a gradual change.. Makes the fish decide faster on what they want to do.

November is a slightly slower month for us here at Dream Catcher Charters. We have good availability all through the period. The best thing to do is give us a call and get on our books if you would like to get out there on board one of our incredible boats to live the dream.
