May 25th 2015 – Whats better than a good burger cooked on the grill for Memorial Day as we remember our fallen throughout our nations history? Fish, Grilled Fish and there is no better fish to eat than Key West yellowtail snapper and grouper. At least I don’t think so. If you have gone reef fishing off of Key West in the last week you would know the reef fishing has been OFF THE RAILS!

18 to 120 ft has been holding some amazing fishing here out of Key West for yellowtail and mutton snapper, red and black grouper. Many boats have been reporting clouds of yellow behind the slick as the yellowtail snappers invade to eat the offerings. Reports of great catches of mutton snapper up on the reef are prevalent as the muttons get ready to go spawn next week during the moon. See…  Mutton Snapper Spawn. Grouper are being caught to fill bag limits quickly.

Here are my tip to the DIY guys. Grouper are hitting the big lipped plugs on the troll. I like to pull plugs in the 18 – 25 ft range. Don’t think that a grouper will hesitate to eat a plug that is coming across his little reef 10 ft over head, he will NAIL it. I like all sorts of plugs but they have to swim at least 15 ft deep for me. Pull them at different speeds watching you rod tip to make sure the plug action is good. I keep it to two plugs being pulled. Keep in mind Mutton snapper will ROCK a trolled plug as well if it is being pulled right..
