June Flats Fishing Report Has Tarpon Permit And Bonefish

Permit fish Girl With Permit

June 7 2015 – The tropics have been kind to us here in Key West and the flats fishing is becoming everything we ever want it to be.

tarpon jumping

June 4th 15 A Key West tarpon jumps to escape capture.

Tarpon fishing is still a BIG thing here in Key West with tarpon moving all around and making anglers happy with huge jumps and amazingly hard runs against anglers using light tackle. On the flats the tarpon are eating really well on fly, live bait and artificial lures. I really enjoy this time of the year for tarpon fishing as many of our competitors are slowing down and the water is wide open to wherever we would like to fish for them.

Permit fishing has been just as amazing and whats really great is that its just getting started for the summer. June marks the start of the permit fishing for me and my anglers with BIG fish coming in and feeding on the flats making some nice shots for my anglers to take advantage of. So far its off to a great start we are seeing a good bit of nice sized fish on the flats tailing and cruising looking for an easy meal. During the full moon permit fishing is a nice distraction from the tarpon while we have the big water tides. Lots of flow makes for some great fishing.

Bonefish release

Bonefish release. Angler releases a bonefish caught with Key West fishing guide Capt. Steven Lamp

Bonefishing is not usually a “thing” for me this time of the year. Maybe I need to change my ways. The last few trips I have taken out, bonefish have been part of my day with some nice fish released in the 4-6 lb range on both fly and spin fishing tackle. Usually during the full moon bonefish can be a tough third of the slam as they tend to be anywhere on the flats and with the deeper water getting a fly or bait to them fast enough can be a challenge. A challenge when you only see 1 or 2 in a push on a flat but not when you see 30 or 40. I am thinking this will be an amazing year for bonefish and all of us as flats fishing guides are loving it.

Flats fishing is a lot of fun. We use two different boats for flats fishing. Yellowfin 24′ Bay boats that float in less than 12″ of water is extremely versatile stable fishing platform for shallow water fish such as tarpon, permit and deeper water bonefish. With the ability of our trolling motors to get us around without spooking the fish many of our less experienced anglers like this approach as the fishing guide will be right next to them on the bow helping them cast and make the most of their day. A traditional Flats Fishing skiff is also available for our anglers where they can test their skills and patience against the most weary fish of all. A flats fishing skiff can be a little tippy for those with balance issues. Our flats fishing skiffs are also a great tool for traditional fishing in super shallow waters for tailing fish. We let our customers decide which one they would like to use. The cost is the same.

Its only going to get better from here to the middle part of October… Get on the books and lets go after some shallow water fish… !
