Bay Boats Make the Windiest Days in the Backcountry Fish-able. Here Keith and Colin are ready for a hit on Thanksgiving.

November 26th 2015 (Thanksgiving Day) – Fishing in these winds was almost unimaginable 20 years ago before we started fishing the backcountry using Bay Boats. These days it has become one of the most popular ways to fish the windier months here in Key West, especially for those that are susceptible to sea sickness. Hiding in an among the islands makes it easy for us to keep our anglers in less than a 1 ft chop. Fast and dry riding bay boats are fun to ride in and get us to the spots fast.

The backcountry fishing charters have been reaping some fun fishing adventures in the last week or so while the winds are gusting to 25 mph. Jacks, barracudas, sharks, lady fish, snappers, goliath groupers and trout have been the headliners to this show and really hitting well. Many of our 4 and 6 hour trips have been putting up to 10 species of fish in the boat with many strikes and hook ups.

Going into December we expect the Key West fishing to get better as we slide closer to winter. We expect to add pompano, blue fish and more species of Mackerel. Once the winds lay down we are able to venture back out to the reef in search of snappers and many other assorted species to add color to the day.

Backcountry fishing is a term we use for fishing in and amongst the islands of the Florida Keys Great White Heron National Wild Life Refuge. From our docks here at Dream Catcher Charters located at Sunset Marina in Key West we are on the fish and fishing within about 10 minutes in most cases. Lots of casting which appeals to our bass fisherman with surprise hits of the fish mentioned above. Our anglers lately have said they really like backcountry fishing because it is loaded with action and the day just flys by.

On our backcountry fishing charters we use very light tackle to fight these fish. So when you are hooked up it is a challenge to get them to the boat making the fishing adventure even more fun. This is a hands on as much as you want trip. That means we will take care of everything for you OR you can do it yourself – your call. Most of the day will be fishing with artificial baits that we supply but we also carry an assortment of live and dead bait to make the most of your day.
