Cold Front Shuts Tarpon Bite Down

tarpon A tired tarpon gives up the leader for a good catch.

March 22 2016 – Cold temps and strong winds make the decent tarpon fishing bite we had last week a nice memory. Winds in excess of 30 mph on Monday and low 60 degree air temps on Tuesday morning dropped the water temps almost 15 degrees in 24 hours.

Terrible thing? No – Completely normal. March has either two kinds of weather. Late cold fronts and wind or wind. Your pick. I like the late cold fronts myself as it provides a line in the sand for the actual tarpon season to kick off with a passion when things warm up. Plus in between the fronts there is usually those sweet days of light winds and great fishing on the flats.

So.. My tarpon fishing forecast looks like this. The winds are coming down and the air temps are coming up. I expect that by Thursday of this week we should be back on the bite and continuing through the weekend. There is a good chance of tropical rains in the forecast for Thursday and Friday.

We don’t have a lot of room in our schedule till about the 26th of March. But do not hesitate to call and see if we have had a cancellation…
