Tarpon release

Tarpon being released by Capt. John (Merlin) at Dream Catcher Charters of Key West in June

June 25th 2016 – This time of the year Key West fishing experiences our summer time. Its hot, muggy with tropical showers that come through without warning now you see me and now you don’t. Actually PERFECT conditions for tarpon fishing here in Key West.

Key West tarpon season is flexible. This year so far has been decent but to be real with this report of the 2016 tarpon fishing season here in Key West so far I have to add that our anglers here at Dream Catchers are not as laser focused on tarpon as they have been in the years past. We have many of our anglers wanting to fish for tarpon to start off then expand the horizons for other species of fish to make a better day of it all the way around. I think this is a great way to experience Key West tarpon fishing and keep the monotony away. That said we still have our folks that are focused on tarpon specifically.

The bite since the full moon has picked up pretty good. There are a lot of big fish around but we are also noticing a huge number of what we call Teenagers (30-70lb tarpon) this is great! With this kind of number of teenagers we know the tarpon fishery is very strong.

We expect the tarpon fishing to be good through the first two weeks of July this year without any unforeseen shake ups in the weather. This is typical and can last as long as September with resident laid up tarpon in the backcountry waters and on the flats. Flats fishing for tarpon this time of the year is very good both for fly fishermen and the light tackle spin fishing enthusiast.

Our bookings through the end of June are pretty strong with some room to get folks out but its tight. July looks better and we love the first two weeks or right after the 4th of July when the crowds lighten up. Avoid the last Wednesday and Thursday of July because that is Boating Mahem here in Key West with all the Lobster Mobsters running over the tarpon to catch a bug.

Booking a tarpon fishing charter with one of our professional tarpon fishing guides here at Dream Catcher Charters is easy. Just give us a call. We always answer the phone and happy to tell you all about your options. We have trips starting at $450.00.
