Permit Fishing

Winter is one of my favorite times for incredible Key West permit fishing.

January 16th 2017 – Fall like conditions prevail with our Key West weather making things a lot of fun in the backcountry and on the flats. South Easterly winds will give the flats fishing the boost needed for some nice permit fishing.

Warm Januarys are nothing new to us here in Key West. As a seasoned flats fishing guide its a welcome pattern for me because I like to go flats fishing in the winter for permit. I find that the warmer days and the South Easterly winds really push the trophies into the shallows looking for a snack. So a good bet here in Key West is flats fishing for permit this week and probably the next as I see no changes in the weather. Add the possibility of a tarpon to the day and you have an anglers dream.

The backcountry fishing is on fire as usual. With more and more people that just want to catch fish, bend a rod and have a snapper filet to take back for lunch our backcountry fishing charters have certainly taken the front seat as the most popluar way to go fishing here in Key West. Starting at just 450.00 for 2 persons its a great way not to break the bank but also pull on some nice fish.

This week expect there to be a mixed bag. Key West Shark fishing was a little slow over the weekend due to cooler water but I expect it to pick up through he warming period.  Jack Crevalles up to 15 lbs are not rare and we are starting to see some cobia (expect that to improve in the coming weeks). Trout fishing this year so far is better than last but still not rock solid as we had hoped.. The trout have been showing best on the cooler days so maybe the next front will produce more numbers. When the winds are down this week around Tuesday through Sunday the 22nd we should have some great opportunities to get out to the reef and mid reefs on our bay boats for some red hot yellowtail and mackerel action.

This week would be a great week for our signature All In Wonder fishing charter where we take 3 or less on our state of the art bay boats out to fish All the arenas we can. Flats, backcountry, Shark, Tarpon, Wreck and reef.. Check out our All In Wonder fishing trip here..

So there you have it.. Another great week for fishing here in Key West. The weather is looking awesome with our next front coming in around Monday of next week (23rd of Jan) Till then it looks like smooth sailing and some great fishing.
