January 5th 2017 – With unseasonably warm weather January is off to a tropical start her in Key West with many of our usual summer suspects lingering around for this warm weather, but a change is on the horizon.

For those that are reading my fishing reports lately its been more of a weather forecast than a fishing report. Thats because its the weather that is making the fishing. This week it has been very warm with highs in the 80s and winds from the SE bringing in the summer like patterns. Thats all set to change this Saturday and Sunday with our first “nasty” cold front that will plunge our temps to the mid 60s where they should be occasionally this time of the year and lets hope set us back on coarse for a great winter.

Lets talk about the flats fishing and backcountry fishing first because that seems to be where the best fishing has been lately. Our anglers have been into the tarpon quite a bit and getting lots of shots at permit and even bonefish.. Yes I said bonefish. this should continue through Saturday morning. The fun fish like jacks, lady fish, trout and the shark fishing has all held up their end of the fishing and keeping people happy. After the front pushes through these “fun” species will increase and the backcountry fishing will improve even more. Look to the backcountry for rod bending excitement mixed with some good smaller snappers with pompano mixed. If we are lucky the cobia will start to show.

Deep sea fishing has been a hit this last week with the sailfish, tuna and kingfish bite. Good catches of sails with some of our charter boats hooking over 6 sailfish on a trip. As the cold front pushes over this weekend the kingfishing will improve with our largest fish showing up this month. Don’t forget the blackfin tuna bite as well to put some sushi in the box.

The reef fishing has been very good. Nice catches of LARGE yellowtail snappers are in this report. Along with the yellowtail bite expect the kingfish to show up with cero mackerel and the yellow jacks. These make a great time with rod bending and good food fish. Grouper season is Now Closed in the South Atlantic and will be until May. That did not stop us from by catching some nice fire truck red groupers this week while fishing for the snappers. I really think the groupers know.. don’t you?

So there you have it.. the forecast and Key West fishing report wrapped up in one. In there business of fishing we are seeing epic numbers of charters. Good thing we added to our fleet to accommodate the new anglers that are realizing you don’t have to be a pro to go fishing in Key West. We love to have fun.
