April 29th 2017 – Winds are up this weekend but coming back to manageable next week to start off our Grouper season here in Key West and get down and dirty with the tarpon that will be migrating through our area. May is without a doubt one of my favorite months of the year. Not only is it my birthday month (3rd) (please send presents and cards to my office – well wishes click here) but its also the start of grouper season and the best part of our Key West tarpon fishing season. Grouper season is OPEN.. YAY.. May 1… Go get em.. Winds will be decent and the trips will be loaded with fish. There are grouper everywhere out there and ready to eat. Along side the grouper anglers can expect amazing catches of yellowtail and mutton snappers as well. A real cornucopia of fishing with loads of color in the box for your day.

Grouper Fishing Charter Notes : To reap the best rewards from a grouper fishing charter make sure you book a full day. On top of that make sure the captain runs you to the grounds where we catch our most consistent grouper.. I call it “to the West”. A full day reef fishing trip is your best bet.

Deep Sea fishing has been really good. Dolphin (mahi-mahi) and sailfish with mixes of wahoo and black fin tunas are being reported daily. Today was probably not a great day out there (winds of 25+) but this week coming up will be pretty good according to the long term forecast with winds around 15 or so.

Deep Sea Charter Notes: Our deep sea sport fishing fleet takes about 40 minutes to get to the reef and beyond. The decent sized dolphin are out there. Its wise to book at least a 6 hour day to make the best of the fishing vs the travel time. If a 4 hour trip is desired, book a faster center console boat like our 36ft Yellowfin that cruises at double the speed, the deep sea fishing rate is the same.

Backcountry fishing and Flats fishing are off the rails. Its tarpon season and things are getting good. I won’t say its the best tarpon season I have ever seen in my 25 years of fishing for them but its far from the worst. My anglers are getting at least a fish a day with many opportunities. The tarpon jumping photo that features this report was from last week. On the flats fishing front there are bonefish up on the flats but not a huge focus for many of us this time of the year because the tarpon fishing is so good. I expect the tarpon migration to kick into high gear at any time with more fish up on the flats. The permit are not back in full force yet from the spawn, however we are seeing some fish.

Backcountry Fishing Charter Notes: It will be hard to wiggle into a schedule for backcountry or flats fishing at this point for the first part of May. Call my office and see what we have for cancellations or openings that might be available. Don’t book a flats trip for permit till about May 15 to be safe. Bonefishing charters will be on the same schedule as the tarpon fishing guides (same guides).
