April 17th 2017 – Easter is behind us and now we focus on this next week in fishing here in Key West. The forecast is less than perfect for those that want sunny days and calm seas for their fishing forecast, however the fishing looks pretty good. Easterly winds will prevail this week through he forecast period with today and tomorrow being problematic with the occasional thunderstorm coming in from the SSE dropping some rain on our parade. As I saw my boats leaving the dock this morning I could tell the folks did not care and they wanted to get after some tarpon and make a day of it, even after I told them that there would be rain. Tomorrow (Tuesday) looks to be the same if not more rain, clearing up by Wednesday.
This week we are focused on the tarpon fishing for sure in the backcountry. The tarpon are in pretty thick and our captains are making good use of peoples time on the water to catch them. All you need is 4 or 6 hours with two or three people to get out there after them. Rates start at 450.00 for a tarpon fishing charter.
The other good stuff going on is the deep sea fishing. With sailfish marching down the reef like like its their job the deep sea fishing boats of Key West are doing well with many releases for their anglers this past week. There are no signs of it slowing. These coming weeks are traditionally our big dolphin (mahi-mahi) weeks. The only issue here is the winds, you will earn your shot at a prize fish as you battle pretty “sporty” conditions offshore. I do see a window of lighter winds at the end of this week. If you get sea sick, you might want to think “Backcountry fishing“.
