June Fishing Off To A Good Start

Key West fishing report for June 2017

Reef fishing

Capt. John, Spencer and Capt John fishing with me we stopped at a local wreck to drop some speed jigs for action and WHAM. Fun Times..

June 2nd 2017 – May is out and June is in. Depending on where you were fishing and how, May was a great month for some and slow for others. The weather was pretty typical, maybe a tick windier than normal but pretty decent with a very warm send off to the month with 92 degree temps sliding into June.

The Key West deep sea fishing in May was awesome. Big dolphin, sailfish, tuna and wahoo with some cool reports of blue marlin in our fleet here out of Key West. The dolphin are typically larger in May and it seemed this year to be larger dolphin and numerous catches of them. Key West is not a great marlin destination but the fleet here managed at least 10 raised fish with 4 to the boat that we know of in May, thats pretty cool and a great surprise for those anglers.

For June we see a drippy start to the month but South Easterly winds that keep the tropics flowing with fish. Dolphin fishing will be strong but fish will get smaller as time goes. Peaking moon phases will flux the marlin and wahoo fishing and there should always be a shot at some black fin tunas working the bait. We fish the deep sea waters off of Key West a couple of different ways. Sport fishing boats that offers the amenities such as A/C and nice walk in bathrooms as well as a salon to get out of the weather in some cases are a great way to go for full days on the water. I say full days as these boats, because of their size and comforts take a while to get out to the fishing grounds. Option 2 is our faster center console fishing boats that can be on the fishing grounds in no time flat making a 4 or 6 hour trip more feasible for better

tarpon

My good friend John holding up his slob tarpon he caught fishing with me last week.

In the backcountry fishing arena we are still focused on tarpon quite a bit. The tarpon fishing in the channels has been very good for us here at Dream Catcher Charters on our backcountry trips where we are still getting lots of shots at tarpon for our folks on our morning and evening trips. Otherwise we have been getting on great with barracudas, jacks and sharks with a nice mix of snappers. Many of our backcountry trips this time of the year can get out to the reef for some snapper fishing to get a nice lunch together to take to our local “You catch em – They Cook em” restaurants.  June can be a very warm month here in Key West, in fact one of our hottest. 4 or 6 hours is plenty on our backcountry fishing charters to show you a great day on the water.

Reef fishing is great this time of the year. Grouper season opened up on May 1 and we have been making good of it with some great catches of red Grouper and black grouper. The reef is located just 5 miles South of Key West making it well within reach for 4 and 6 hour trips. Just last week we got our brand new 36ft Yellowfin center console that  is powered by 3 Mercury Verado 350 hp outboards making the trip to the reefs and wrecks a quick and easy one with the best riding boat on the market today. We have been targeting anything that will eat on the “Too Intense” showing the folks who fish with us on her a great day on the water catching grouper, snapper, jacks and mackerel.

Last but not the least my any means is the Key West flats fishing. We are seeing some of the best bone fishing we have seen in a few years here out of Key West. Schools of bonefish 20 and 30 in number. The flats are alive and healthy as they can be and stunning to see as usual. I get out on the flats myself at least once a week and still to this day, after 20 years as a flats fishing guide I cannot get over the beauty out there. You will love it too, fishing for permit and bonefish this time of the year in perfect tropical weather conditions that favor a shot with light tackle or fly fishing for a trophy bonefish, permit or tarpon. I love June, July, August and September for the big three. They are all here and ready to make you smile. We can fish the flats on our bay boats or our technical flats fishing skiffs.
