Reef Fishing Is Great!

Reef fishing has been very good this week off Key West. Reef fishing report.

Yellowtail Snappers

Key West reef fishing this week has been very good. Lots of tasty fish on the reefs.

June 30 2017 – Its calm, its clear its perfect. For fishing the reef here off of Key West. The winds are down making it an easy run out to where the tasty dinners live.

Our reef fishing charters have been coming in with some nice catches of snappers this week and I expect this trend to last for a good while. We spent about 45 minutes on the reef yesterday casting jigs and flys at yellowtail snappers and put a nice box of fish together. The fish seemed super hungry. Then it dawned on me. The commercial reef fishing fleet is out of season on Yellowtail snappers, so, the snappers are not all filled up with chum. My thoughts were confirmed as I filet one of our 5lb yellowtails yesterday that were caught within 9 miles of Key West and they were not all jammed up with crap in their stomachs. In fact, these fish were empty bellied, which might explain why they were eating so well.

The bite was great and I expect it to stay strong through the period. One only has to imagine that by taking 20 – 30 big yellowtail fishing boats off the reef dropping 10-20lbs of chum an hour that the bite will have to reflect that difference in food availability. And it has.

Commercial yellowtail fishing will resume on August 1st of 2017. The fishing will still be great. These guys have to get back out there, make a living and to feed their families. Commercial fishing is a very important weight in the balance of the fishing industry here in Key West.

The forecast has some typical tropical weather in it for the next week but the winds will be down making it easy for any of our boats to get out and go reef fishing and have some fun, put some filets in the boat for dinner or lunch.

July is getting filled up for fishing charters but we still have some availability for folks to get out with us on the nicest boats in Key West with the most professional captains around.
