April Fishing In Key West

Key West Fishing Report for April 2018

Key West Fishing Fishing Key West backcountry waters.

April 7 2018 – March went out like a lion and April is here with some great weather to get out and go fishing out of Key West. April can go either way in my experience. Super windy or amazingly calm. Both are good and bad for the different fisheries and I will cover a bit of both here in my April Key West fishing report. Remember, we are always just a phone call away with loads of information about how to make your Key West fishing vacation the best it can be.

Deep Sea Fishing Key West

Dolphin mahi mahi

April and May is a great time for nice big dolphin. Key West is really close to the blue waters of the Gulf stream.

In the deep water this month we can expect shots at some of the years largest dolphin (mahi mahi). through the years our largest fish have been boated in April. quite a reward for those wishing to stick it out on the troll. South East winds are best for the larger dolphin. Sailfish are very predominant in the month of April. Look for the cooler winds from eh East and North east for a nice solid color change and great kite fishing conditions. There will be some black fins still around and fun to catch..

Key West Deep sea fishing charters fill up pretty fast in April. Its a busy month all around the fishing arena but this is Deep sea fishing best month in Key West. We offer 4, 6, and 8 hour trips. We recommend at least a 6 hour experience. We can either get you out on our 36 ft Yellowfin center console or our fleet of Key West Deep Sea sport fishing boats. We also offer last minute split or shared deep sea fishing charters. Check out our Deep Sea Fishing Rates web site for detailed information about the costs.

Backcountry Fishing and Flats Fishing

I usually do not report on both of those at the same paragraph but this month I will. April holds a great Key West tarpon fishing and that is the gist of most of our backcountry fishing and our flats fishing this month. We have a strong tarpon fishery in the 3 ft and deeper waters along with some good bone fishing on the flats to entertain anyone looking for a shot in the shallows. The permit are on vacation this month as they spawn. Barracudas are a fun way to get some shallow water high speed action as well.

Backcountry fishing and Key West flats fishing are very similar. Check out the article I wrote about it and get informed.  – Backcountry Flats fishing Article – You will see why these two ways of fishing get confused.

We offer fishing charters to the backcountry and flats in 4, 6, and 8 hour days. We recommend 4 or 6 hours. The prices are all the same if you are on a flats boat or a bay boat. starting at 450.00 for 4 hours and 2 persons. Just give us a call and we are always here to help you sort out whatever it is you would like to do.

Key West Reef Fishing

April is just a few weeks shy of grouper season here in the Atlantic but that does not mean the Key West reef fishing is off limits by any stretch of the imagination. The yellowtail snapper bite will be epic all month and the shots at Mutton snappers and yelloweye snappers is incredible. A great way to put dinner fare on the table. The deep water wrecks also hold some nice amber jacks too for those that are sporting enough to try for one. They sure pull hard and can wear an angler out.

Mutton Snapper

Using artificial for mutton snapper fishing on the reef is really a lot of fun.

In the Gulf there is a really good blacken tuna fishery that we like to visit a few times a year where we fish behind the shrimp boats.. Fun times..

Our reef fishing charters are fun, fast and easy. In our 36 ft Yellowfin center console we can reach the reef in about 20 minutes and offer a great fishing charter on just a half a day with rates starting at just 750.00 for up to 6 persons. just give us a call and we will personally walk you through all the options.

So, April.. yes…. a GREAT time to come fishing in Key West. We have a web site dedicated to the costs of fishing charters. Key West Fishing Rates will help you decide what is best for your fun in fishing here in Key West.
