August Backcountry / Flats Fishing Is Amazing

Barracuda, fishing Barracuda fishing can be a great way to fish the backcountry for fast strikes and hard fights.

August 12th 2019 – This is the slow season for Key West fishing. For the folks that visit Key West most have the kids going back to school and the football seasons have started. An eye to local things coming up like hunting season mixed with Halloween, Homecoming, Thanks Giving and the mother of all holidays – Christmas. Then there is the threat of a storm looming from the tropics during our peak months of Hurricane season. So going on vacation to the tropics of Key West is not a real priority for many folks this time of the year.

There are still some big tarpon around this time of the year but the most common tarpon we see is the juveniles that are really fun to catch.

For the locals this time of the year means Fewer people here on island indicating “off season”. A time where many Key West businesses consider closing the doors for a few weeks and get off the rock and out of town. Many fishing guides use this time to Re-build re-power and get ready for next fishing season.

For some, visitors and fishing guides this is the time we love to take advantage of the peace and quiet. We get out on the water in the backcountry and enjoy the not a boat in sight scenery this time of the year.

Backcountry Fishing Report

The backcountry fishing has been steady. We are still catching tarpon early before the heat, seeing good shots at permit while fishing the flats and hitting them with crabs when we have them. Barracudas have been blowing up in population these last few months here out of Key West to offer our anglers some really cool top water adventure. There have been some snappers and on the line legal groupers caught in the channels and on the edges as well for a nice tasty snack for our anglers to take to the local Hook and Cook. Shark fishing has been decent on the higher flow tide days.

Backcountry Fishing Forecast

I really see no changes for the coming week and a half in our backcountry fishing. There are no storms on the horizon, the weather is and has been perfect and the fishing has been good. Coming up we have a full moon in a few days which will keep flushing the backcountry areas with cool waters and nice flow for the fish to find food. Tarpon fishing is always a crap shoot after season but I am pretty sure we will have good shots at them at least through the end of the month.
