Fishing Report

June 13 2013 – Give us good weather and the fishing will Rock!

Permit fishing

Fishing The Flats of Key West this angler has a great day fishing with Capt. Kyle Walsh of Dream Catcher Charters.

After the tropical system that turned into Andrea passed through here and rinsed off the island chain we have had nothing but epic fishing conditions and incredible fishing reports to follow.

Inshore the tarpon fishing is still full on. The migration has not slowed a bit and there are thousands of fish circling Key West and the Marquesas Keys. On the flats the permit have been making a great showing. I was fishing the flats yesterday on what I would consider a weak incoming tide and was still able to put my fly fishing angler on some great shots of tailing fish. Bonefishing has also been pretty good but not stellar just yet. Some fish in the 4-6 lb range have been caught. Its not a stretch to try and go for the big three Key West Grand Slam. Elsewhere in the shallows we have some excellent table fare in our snapper population that has invaded the Key West backcountry waters. Mangrove snappers are super tasty and hard fighters on light tackle. Don’t forget our toothy guys for some extra fun with barracudas and sharks.

Offshore the dolphin fishing has been a 50 – 50 sport mixed with some blue and white marling on the troll. Several blue marlin and some whites have been hooked in the last few days on our offshore boats in this super calm waters conditions. Dolphin up to 40 lbs have been eating and entertaining anglers off Key West.

The reef is loaded with snappers and remember it is grouper season. Get to some good bottom with any of our light tackle fishing guides and you will be rewarded with a STELLAR dinner of Yellowtails, Muttons and Red Grouper. There are some black grouper around as well to put some more color in the box.

April 15th 2013 – Backcountry and flats fishing report in Key West Florida with Dream Catcher Charters

Flats Fishing

Today was the day.. Wow, very nice. this weekend was favored by some pretty incredible flats fishing as well. The shallows are super clean and full of life. This is the start of the Key West flats fishing season. Bonefish, tarpon and permit will be the big three focus for fishing guides like Capt. Steven Lamp and Capt. Kyle Kelso both of Dream Catcher Charters. Over the weekend many shots at permit and bonefish were had in the shallows. Also for fun and entertainment we had some great shots at some hard pulling barracudas and super light black tip sharks.. Our flats boat has some dates available for dedicated flats fishing trips for these species.. Get with us and set something up.

Bookings for flats fishing with Capt. Steven and Capt. Kyle are filling up for the summer and fall. Call us..

Backcountry fishing.

The word of the day for backcountry fishing this time of the year is always tarpon. But thats not all. Fishing the basins and along the edges we have been getting into some kick ass trout fishing. Fish up to 4 lbs. Yea.. 4 lbs.. thats a HUGE Key West trout. Along with the trout bite we have also experienced some great hard pulling fun fishing with the Lady fish. Capt. Hugh of Dream Catcher Charters had an angler that caught a 4.2 lb lady fish on 12 lb test. thats a hoot. Shark fishing is also great this time of the year. We have been getting into some large bull sharks and lemons with little effort showing our anglers a great day on the water.

We are super busy this time of the year with our bay boats and flats boats.. Most of our trips are tarpon fishing But Call us anyway.. We may know someone that has the day open or we have a cancellation in our schedule that you can take advantage of..

The Forecast…

Looks like ESE winds will prevail keeping it warm and mild. 10 – 15 mph with some days higher.. A trend for lighter winds will be coming on the 21st.. Keep in Mind the tarpon will be on the flats in May along with the rest of them.

Key West Fishing This week Jan 4th

Busy weeks here at Dream Catcher Charters the Christmas week and New years week

Happy New Year everybody we wish you all the happiness in the world.. And may your fishing days be filled with tight lines and screaming drags..

On To The Fishing Report

Its been really great the last few days especially with the winds at 5 and temps in the mid seventies.. I personally have been fishing a mixed bag of offshore West wreck and reef to the South and on the reef and then flats fishing.. The captains here at Dream Catcher charters have also been doing some incredible backcountry and flats fishing as well. Lots of families in town so father son trips prevail. Its all been really fun and productive.

Start with wreck and reef fishing we were out west and into some fantastic mutton snapper fishing. We did not have to run far but we got some nice fish in the 9 – 13 lb. range.. The water was dirty over some of the wrecks so I was unable to compound there with much more than a nice sized barracuda.. But.. out on the reef we were into some HUGE cero mackerel up to 9 lb.. These are the only good eating (without smoking) mackerel in my book and we caught plenty along with some nice yellowtail snappers to round off the meal for my folks that day. to add to all that we also boated a nice pair of kings in the 30# range with some hard pulling horse eyed jacks.. On another trip we went after a nice selection of yellowtail snappers to 22 inches. 4 people fishing with me were able to take home two large zip lock bags of Yellowtail snapper eating filets for their efforts on our half day trip to the reef.

Backcountry Fishing Report

My trip yesterday was epic fishing with a man from the North East. We were into some serious sport fish in the shallows. Huge tarpon to start off the day we were casting plugs to them and got two to eat but shook it off immediately. These fish were PIGS! They had to be the largest tarpon I have ever seen here in the winter time. After the tarpon persuit mellowed we started shaking the tree edges and got into some redfish on the fly. EPIC.. two fish hooked and both lost in the roots….grrrr.. That was almost as fun as the Snook up to about 10 lbs that were snaking us all over hell and back to break us off as well. My angler just couldn’t stop them. Well not to be outdone, we then proceeded at around 11 to go permit fishing on a South facing flat on an incoming tide with live crabs. The timing on these fish was impeccable. About every 5 minutes or 100 feet of flat covered we had a shot at either a nice big tailer, a static floater or a pair of micro perms. My anglers casting efforts garnered him a nice hook up with a suicide permit that ran right for the boat. “think” went the line and he was gone. Bummer :( better luck next year on that. So we then finished up the day with large barracudas on the flats.

The captains of Dream Catchers have been into the same stuff as i have. Redfish, trout, jacks, mutton snappers and more. Shark fishing has been a popular trip for our anglers to book this week and plenty of hook ups have ensued. Mark Derango from Dallas TX. A young man of 8 years old this week caught a 60 lb black tip to the boat un assisted.. Nice work little dude.

So there you have it.. Our happenings here at the Dream Catcher Charters in Key West the last few days..

Windy Conditions Prevail Backcountry Fishing is Hot!

An angler fishing with Capt. Kyle Kelso of Dream Catcher Charters poses with a Key West Redfish.

Windy conditions have prevailed since the Power Boat Race week and expected to continue through next week with a steady 15 – 25 mph out of the NE and East.

Backcountry fishing has been pretty darn good none the less. Here at Dream Catcher Charters we have been running a steady flow of trips with an unseasonably busy November coming off of a particularly great October. Thanks to all of our repeat clientele and much new business to fill our boats with some incredible offseason fishing opportunities.

Trout have been the word. Ever since Dream Catchers broke the news that trout were biting off Key West back in September the bite is still on. The fish move slightly from place to place but be certain that our professional fishing guides are on their tails. Catches lately of 24 inches have hit the board and what a fish that is for Key West or anywhere for that matter. The maturity of our trout fishery here has sure shown itself.

Redfish have been spotty but as the water cools (currently 70 + – 4 depending on time of day and tide) the redfish are finding their way into the winter time haunts and becoing more consistent for our dedicated anglers. Along the way you will also run into the goliath groupers and some large snappers with the occasional smaller snook that eats your offering.

Pompano showed up a few weeks ago. Leave it to our captains to root out these tasty Florida seafood fish. Pompano put up a great fight and offer our anglers one more trophy species to add to the list..

Flats Fishing

Permit fishing has been super strong the last couple weeks. We have been able to offer our clients that want to put in the time a great number of shots at these sought after fish. Bonefishing was slow this year to start with and now seems to have come to a close with the sub 70 degree temps.. Not to say they cannot be found on the ocean facing flats where temps are a little warmer but its not consistent enough for us to consider a “bonefishing” trip,. Barracudas and mutton snappers are the incredible by catch of the flats here in Key West this time of the year. Ya never know where they might be. Mutton snappers up to 7 lbs have been landed by our team here at Dream Catchers.

All in all with the wind we are still showing folks an amazing day on the waters here in Key West on board our bay boats.

Feel free to drop us a line and talk to us about fishing in Key West. We are happy to point you in the right direction.

Key West Fishing Forecast November 2012

Hey Gang…. We are still here after hurricane Sandy No effects at all. First off our thoughts and prayers go out to the folks in the North East.. We know what you are going through.. Just keep digging and in a little while it will just have been an experience in stead of a life altering circumstance. Just keep digging and if it looks damaged or water soaked call your adjuster… Oh and generators stay OUTSIDE!..

Grouper fishing Key West

Wreck and Reef Will Light Up. But.. Choose your day.

The fishing here in Key West has been OFF since before Fantasy Fest here in Key West so I really have nothing to report from the last week. Not only bad weather but festivities and what not.. We just took a break…

We are back on the water as of yesterday. the same old cast of characters were around like trout, jacks, sharks.. but it was a little cooler. Offshore things are back to normal with sailfish starting to show and the tuna on the reef line just like planned. I have not been to the west yet but I am sure the fish are hungry and the cooler water will help that bite.

Next Month.. November.. Its going to be good. We are seeing some cooling trends coming through lowering our water temps early this year which is good. I much rather have a line drawn in the sand from summer to winter than a back and forth deal where the fish remain confused about what season it is.

Backcountry and Flats fishing

Dont be afraid to book these fun trips. We have a blast back there on wintery days. Trout, redfish, permit, pompano, sharks, blue fish and jacks with the occasional cobia in the mix. the backcountry flats fishing days are major fun for those that are concerned about windy days (November is full of them) and getting beat up. We go hide back there and rip lips on rod bending trips or sneak up on some permit for the trophy hunter. Its all good. Bonefishing not so great this month in Key West… Look to Islamorada and Key Largo for the bonefish as they have the warmer waters longer.

Reef Wreck fishing

November is windy. BUT.. theres is a saving grace here. We will not go out if it sucks. you book your wreck reef day with us and if it is to windy to do what you want.. you don’t have to go, no charge.. Its easy.. I dont want to get beaten either. The reef bite will be off the rails in November. Cooler waters churned up a bit and not crystal clear means a strong grouper bite with mutton snappers and yellowtails for the table. Cobia will be on the wrecks as well. Keep in mind I will only kill one good sized cobia per trip or two smaller ones. Also keep in mind Grouper season closes in January.. Make use of the time. Lets get em. Call my office to see what I have going on.

Deep Sea Fishing

The sailfish are coming. Deep sea fishing both live bait and trolling the sail fishing will be great along with Wahoo, Tuna and the occasional larger Dolphin.. We are booking deep sea fishing trips now for November. Look at the Full moon for Wahoo shots and the tuna bite moves around the clock willy nilly, take your shots.
