Cobia

Key West Cobia Caught With Dream Catcher Charters Capt. Kyle Kelso

The Winds are Up.. Key West Fishing is Great! We have our whole fleet on the water making waves as well as catching fish.

Great report coming in from Capt. Kyle Kelso of Dream Catcher Charters. Fishing the patch reefs with MirroLure lipped plugs Yellowtail Snappers, Mutton Snappers and Grouper are all the fun on the edges. Casting will get you a mixed bag of hard hitting great fighting fun fish. Yellowtail snappers are quite large this time of year on the shallow reefs. Nice feature when the wind is blowing so you don’t have to get out very far to have some fun… Back in the backcountry Capt Kyle got into a MESS of cobia working a channel. (seen Here) with fish ranging from 10 – 25 lbs.

Capt. Kyle Walsh of Dream Catcher Charters also got into it today with a nice assortment of sharks. Bull sharks are super prevalent this time of the year as well as lemon shark and Blacktip Sharks. Check out our Shallow Water Monsters Tour shark fishing trip if sharks are your game.

Offshore its pretty breezy but the sailfish are starting to push on through. Several nice sailfish have been reported just outside the reef eating live baits and showing off with huge jumps.. This weekend is the annual Kingfish tournament here in Key West. All the big battle wagons are here to line up for a shot at some nice prizes catching a decent kingfish. With lots of bait in town we expect this year the winning fish will be over 60lbs..

January 13th Weekend Update

January fishing is setting up nicely in Key West.

Sea trout

A Pair Of Sea Trout

Now that the new year is officially underway we can look forward to getting back to the business of fishing here in Key West. We have had a banner weekend in the backcountry with a decent weekend offshore.

Backcountry / Flats fishing

Out back the flats and backcountry have been very good in spite of a pretty stiff Easterly breeze just about every day. Last report I mentioned tarpon fishing. Well it was “ok” with a few fish caught we could definitely tell that it was a mid winter anomaly. I suspect February will be the beginning of our late winter consistent tarpon fishing. Not to fret the fishing has been amazing everywhere else. The flats have been solid with permit on the deck tailing it up. Along side them are the rays with the possibility of Jacks and Cobia following them like lost puppies. Many cobia and jacks come in out of the Gulf Of Mexico tailing the Sharks and large rays looking for a free meal. Also on the flats we have ben fortunate enough to be getting into some nice redfish as well to the 6 lb range. The trout this year have come in large supply and that did not end this weekend. We have been getting into the 22-28 inch trout pretty regular out back along with some nice pompano and snappers. All told with the other fun fish we are into an angler could feasibly catch his weight in fish on a four hour trip.

Offshore Deep Sea

Blackfin Tuna is the word of the week offshore. Many fish are stacked up on the deep water wrecks just south of Key West waiting for a handful of white bait to be thrown at them. Our tuna have been running nice sized this year with fish up to 28lbs. Along the reef the kingfish are making for nice fast runs and lighting up the water. We use super light tackle on both of these fish to make it more fun for our anglers. On the reef as well the yellowtail snapper bite has been very good as well with anglers catching limit regularly on 4 and 6 hour trips. Cero mackerel are also a fish to be reckoned with as they are running 8-10lbs. One of the better tasting Mackerel in my opinion.

The winter has always been my favorite time to fish Key West with the weather, the numbers of fish we have here in the cooler months and of course this is when people want to be here to get out of the snow. January is a busy month for us here at Dream Catcher Charters but we still have some room left in our schedule and offering some discounts as well. The best thing to do is just give us a call for an up to the minute fishing report or to book a trip with us or any of the great fishing guides in Key West.

Tarpon In January Key West Report

Lets Go Tarpon Fishing In January!

Key West tarpon fishing

Tarpon Fishing Key West Dream Catcher Charters

I can call it. The South Easterly winds, as annoying as they can be when its blowing 25, are pumping warm Gulf Stream air and water into Key West. With the copious amounts of bait in and around Key West the hungry tarpon from the Gulf of Mexico have arrived and they are stacked up in our channels and out lying backcountry spots. Not an uncommon thing here in Key West. It happens about every 5-7 years and because I have been doing this a long time I know what to watch to keep an eye out for it. No, its not global warming, its just a warm winter.. don’t freak out, its been happening long before our first carbon emission..

Does that mean it will stay>? I don’t think so. (hope not).. We need a cold February to set things back on schedule. This is like the line in the sand to separate seasons. But, if February and March proves as warm as January…. Well then we might see tarpon on the flats by end of April.

NOW>. this is not to say we will book a “Tarpon Fishing” charter yet.. BUT>. We will certainly add this species to the list if we think you have a shot at boating one and you have the desire to do so.  Warm winter time tarpon can be either fickle or hungry and it goes from day to day more so than regular season migrational fish. Fishing Report New Years Update

The Real Key West Fishing Report New Years Week Edition

Its been a busy week here at Dream Catcher Charters in Key West.. With a fantastic weather set up for the last week we were able to get all of our scheduled fishing charters off the dock and provide some great fun for the people who went both inshore and backcountry.

Scroll To the Bottom for the New Years weather forecast….

Backcountry And Flats

Permit capt. steven lamp, key west fishing

Capt. Steven Poses with a Key West permit..

A busy schedule means lots of fishing for our captains and that means getting dialed in on fish with acute accuracy. Our fishing charters are into the fish on each and every trip. Trout, redfish, sharks, cobia, mackerel, pompano, jacks and mutton snappers were to short list of species we were getting into here in Key West. On the flats the permit did not let us down. When the conditions were right we were able to get up on top of the shallow waters and have many shots at these very unpredictable fish.

Winter time backcountry fishing is definitely the most popular fishing charter in Key West. More numbers of backcountry fishing charters head out this time of the year than any other for many reasons.

  1. Backcountry waters are always calm and the scenery is true Florida Keys mangrove island goodness.
  2. Fishing is high volume fun rod bending excitement
  3. Bay Boats are comfortable for 4 people or less and everyone can fish, cast, hang out
  4. 4 hour trips turn into 3.5 hours of fishing with travel time
  5. Snappers, trout, pompano and cobia make for great table fare.
  6. Super Affordable

Wreck Reef and Deep Sea

Key feature has been the weather here for great days on the reefs. The last month of grouper season in the Atlantic Ocean has provided us with many trips to the reef in search of great table fare. Red grouper and black grouper have been mixed in with yellowtail snappers and mutton snappers to make for a colorful catch box. Grouper season closes on January 1st in the South Atlantic (Key West waters), but the snappers are still open and plentiful. Full day trips are the best way to enjoy your day here with massive results.

More reef fishing has been just south of Key West for the mackerel and tuna bite. varying conditions make one day different than another but the mackerel are always there and ready to really give our anglers a heck of a fight on light tackle spin fishing gear. Cero mackerel up to 9 lbs have been pretty regular and many to the boat in cast after cast succession. Stops on the reefs close by have offered up dynamic yellowtail snapper fishing with the occasional mutton snapper and black or red grouper. These 4 and 6 hour trips are really fun and well worth the money to get out there with minimal travel time and very affordable. A group of 4 can go do this for as little as 675.00 on board our 32ft center console “Intense”.

Key West New Years Weather Forecast

Gonna Get a little breezy..

Gonna Get a little breezy..

Today (friday) and most of tomorrow looks great.. Saturday night the 29th starts to get back to blustery conditions with winds up to 25 mph. Backcountry fishing will be pretty good with the Northerly blow and cooler temps as we can hide from the chop and keep it nice and calm still catching fish, but it will be cooler.

Offshore does not look all that great Sunday, Monday and Maybe Tuesday with seas coming up  with the winds.

If It were me backcountry fishing would be my focus if I wanted to get out through Tuesday New Years day. Then, the winds get back to a manageable 10 mph and it will be super nice for offshore adventures once again.

You can always get up to the minute TRUE weather and fishing reports by calling my office…. We don’t shy on the truth like some of our counterparts. We tell it like it is.. We want you to come back after you learn to trust us.
