January 13th Weekend Update

January fishing is setting up nicely in Key West.

A Pair Of Sea Trout

Now that the new year is officially underway we can look forward to getting back to the business of fishing here in Key West. We have had a banner weekend in the backcountry with a decent weekend offshore.

Backcountry / Flats fishing

Out back the flats and backcountry have been very good in spite of a pretty stiff Easterly breeze just about every day. Last report I mentioned tarpon fishing. Well it was “ok” with a few fish caught we could definitely tell that it was a mid winter anomaly. I suspect February will be the beginning of our late winter consistent tarpon fishing. Not to fret the fishing has been amazing everywhere else. The flats have been solid with permit on the deck tailing it up. Along side them are the rays with the possibility of Jacks and Cobia following them like lost puppies. Many cobia and jacks come in out of the Gulf Of Mexico tailing the Sharks and large rays looking for a free meal. Also on the flats we have ben fortunate enough to be getting into some nice redfish as well to the 6 lb range. The trout this year have come in large supply and that did not end this weekend. We have been getting into the 22-28 inch trout pretty regular out back along with some nice pompano and snappers. All told with the other fun fish we are into an angler could feasibly catch his weight in fish on a four hour trip.

Offshore Deep Sea

Blackfin Tuna is the word of the week offshore. Many fish are stacked up on the deep water wrecks just south of Key West waiting for a handful of white bait to be thrown at them. Our tuna have been running nice sized this year with fish up to 28lbs. Along the reef the kingfish are making for nice fast runs and lighting up the water. We use super light tackle on both of these fish to make it more fun for our anglers. On the reef as well the yellowtail snapper bite has been very good as well with anglers catching limit regularly on 4 and 6 hour trips. Cero mackerel are also a fish to be reckoned with as they are running 8-10lbs. One of the better tasting Mackerel in my opinion.

The winter has always been my favorite time to fish Key West with the weather, the numbers of fish we have here in the cooler months and of course this is when people want to be here to get out of the snow. January is a busy month for us here at Dream Catcher Charters but we still have some room left in our schedule and offering some discounts as well. The best thing to do is just give us a call for an up to the minute fishing report or to book a trip with us or any of the great fishing guides in Key West.

Key West Fishing Forecast November 2012

Hey Gang…. We are still here after hurricane Sandy No effects at all. First off our thoughts and prayers go out to the folks in the North East.. We know what you are going through.. Just keep digging and in a little while it will just have been an experience in stead of a life altering circumstance. Just keep digging and if it looks damaged or water soaked call your adjuster… Oh and generators stay OUTSIDE!..

Grouper fishing Key West

Wreck and Reef Will Light Up. But.. Choose your day.

The fishing here in Key West has been OFF since before Fantasy Fest here in Key West so I really have nothing to report from the last week. Not only bad weather but festivities and what not.. We just took a break…

We are back on the water as of yesterday. the same old cast of characters were around like trout, jacks, sharks.. but it was a little cooler. Offshore things are back to normal with sailfish starting to show and the tuna on the reef line just like planned. I have not been to the west yet but I am sure the fish are hungry and the cooler water will help that bite.

Next Month.. November.. Its going to be good. We are seeing some cooling trends coming through lowering our water temps early this year which is good. I much rather have a line drawn in the sand from summer to winter than a back and forth deal where the fish remain confused about what season it is.

Backcountry and Flats fishing

Dont be afraid to book these fun trips. We have a blast back there on wintery days. Trout, redfish, permit, pompano, sharks, blue fish and jacks with the occasional cobia in the mix. the backcountry flats fishing days are major fun for those that are concerned about windy days (November is full of them) and getting beat up. We go hide back there and rip lips on rod bending trips or sneak up on some permit for the trophy hunter. Its all good. Bonefishing not so great this month in Key West… Look to Islamorada and Key Largo for the bonefish as they have the warmer waters longer.

Reef Wreck fishing

November is windy. BUT.. theres is a saving grace here. We will not go out if it sucks. you book your wreck reef day with us and if it is to windy to do what you want.. you don’t have to go, no charge.. Its easy.. I dont want to get beaten either. The reef bite will be off the rails in November. Cooler waters churned up a bit and not crystal clear means a strong grouper bite with mutton snappers and yellowtails for the table. Cobia will be on the wrecks as well. Keep in mind I will only kill one good sized cobia per trip or two smaller ones. Also keep in mind Grouper season closes in January.. Make use of the time. Lets get em. Call my office to see what I have going on.

Deep Sea Fishing

The sailfish are coming. Deep sea fishing both live bait and trolling the sail fishing will be great along with Wahoo, Tuna and the occasional larger Dolphin.. We are booking deep sea fishing trips now for November. Look at the Full moon for Wahoo shots and the tuna bite moves around the clock willy nilly, take your shots.

Permit Fishing Key West

Permit Fishing On The Flats Key West

Summer time fishing in Key West has been GREAT!

The crew here at Dream Catcher Charters has been busy, busy, busy. Inshore, offshore and our family fun fishing charters.

Inshore Capt Kyle K. and Chris C. of Dream Catcher Charters fishing aboard their Yellowfin 24 bay boats powered by Mercury Verado 300′s have been reporting waves, not singles but waves of bonefish mugging them on the flats while in pursuit of tailing permit. These guys are very responsive to a shrimp tipped jig eating well. According to Capt. Sparky he landed a fish on Friday that was well over 7 lbs. Capt. Kyle has reported two releases of NICE sizes upper slot snook.  [Read more...]

Key West Fishing Report March 15th

Boy has it been busy.. We have been running at full steam here at Dream Catcher Charters.

Backcountry fishing has been the name of the game this past week with huge volume of fish being caught on a multi species level.

As I write this Capt. Dave just came in after fishing all day with a man and his young son. They were able to put 3 species of snappers, 2 species of Shark, Jacks, pompano and a Tarpon to boot. Now thats a pretty great day for a 12 and 13 year old and his first time fishing the Key West area from england.. Very Cool, way to go guys.

Capt. Kyle (AKA Norton) texted me a few minutes ago and he was telling me about his fly fisherman had shots at two permit so far on the flats here off of Key West tailing.. Grrrrr. he said the angler has great skill sets for fly fishing till you put him in front of fish then he falls apart.. Reminds me of an article I wrote J.A.F.F. its a fishing technique that helps with this sort of “buck fever” that sets in on fly fishermen. Maybe it could help you all out there too..

Capt. Kelso is was neck deep in it this afternoon catching redfish and seeing many permit on the edge of a flat to the North.. Till some moron mightier than thou competitive fishing guide ran him over, just 20 ft away saying he was looking for Blue Runners.. Kelso professionally redirected his efforts and was very cordial to the aforementioned moron and was able to catch more fish after he was interrupted.. Thats just bad business for everyone to be a jerk intentionally. there is a ton of water out there and many ways to go around another fishing guide with super nice people on board.

The weather here in Key West is windy.. 10 – 15 today with a promise of 25 by the end of the week but the fishing will go on especially in the backcountry waters on our incredible fleet of bay boats by Yellowfin Yachts and Action Craft powered by Mercury Marine Opti Max and Verado outboards.

We are getting very filled up in our schedule but we have other fishing guides that we work with to get you out there and on your way to a great day of fishing here in Key West, Florida. All you have to do is call and let us set you up. Speak with Gennifer, Robert or myself Capt. Steven and we will point you in the right direction.
