Backcountry fishing Key West report

December 1 2017 – Key West backcountry fishing right on schedule for December with beautiful days, gorgeous waters and great fishing for our anglers here at Dream Catcher Charters.

Speckeld Sea Trout in Key West.

Everyone that goes fishing In Key West with us knows we offer the best trip for the money with amazing results on the nicest backcountry fishing boats around. With all that it sure helps when the fish cooperate. This is one of those times.

This past week our backcountry fishing charters have been getting into a nice selection of different species. On our inshore trips we always start off our trips fishing for tarpon if we think there is a shot. With the warmer weather in November this has paid off on most of our trips with nice shots at 30-60 lb tarpon on live bait. After the tarpon, we then set out to the channels, basins and flats where we have been crushing the species of fish casting artificial lures to them and really having a ball catching. We call it the Dream Catcher Drift. Trout, pompano, Spanish mackerel, mangrove snappers, mutton snapper, ladyfish and jacks have all made the line up for the mixed bag of species this last week and I only see it getting better.

As an added bonus to our backcountry fishing the flats fishing has also been really good. We have seen many permit on the flats mixed with nice sized barracudas and sharks are always cruising the tops of the flats in search of a good meal. As the waters get cooler and winter settles in this December I feel as though the flats fishing will only get

baby tarpon

Key West holds baby tarpon fishing surprises all year long.

better adding jacks and Cobia to the mix as they follow the sting rays and sharks.  This time of the fishing season year I really like to pay attention to the edges of the flats where i have found some of the largest mutton snappers hanging out in the winter waters. That makes for a nice sandwich at the end of the trip for my anglers.

Winter time is without a doubt the busiest time of the year for our inshore, backcountry and flats fishing here in Key West. Partly because it can be windy and some folks cannot handle high seas, mostly because its the most affordable way to get a private fishing charter in Key West. Just you and up to three friends and a captain showing you where and how to fish and enjoy a super peaceful day on the water. We offer 4, 6, and 8 hour trips starting at $450.00.

Christmas Week is getting pretty busy.
