Backcountry Trout Bananza

Trout fishing Key West backcountry is on fire.

January 7th 2019 –  Working everyday these last few weeks has really been a privilege here in Key West fishing at Dream Catcher Charters. We have been blessed with amazing weather, incredible fishing and really fun folks to fish with. It looks like January will be no different for us.

The Backcountry Fishing Report

These last few weeks has held some great fishing in the backcountry. There is lots going on in the shallows with the cooler weather finally settling in keeping our water temps perfect with a hint of summer during the top of the days. This type of weather pattern really appeals to many of the species we fish for here in Key West.

Seatrout
Nice catches of sea trout like these are a daily occurance here on our trips at Dream Catcher Charters.

Many catches of lady fish, big jacks, pompano, mangrove snapper, mutton snapper, barracudas, bluefish, Spanish mackerel and Trout have been reported daily. Some of our half day backcountry fishing charters have been coming in with reports of catching over 40 fun fighting fish. Lots of casting and catching without having to sit and wait.

The speckled sea trout is the highlight character this year and in this fishing report. Being compared to years past the trout bite has been out of control this year in the Key West backcountry. Many of our trips are catching 10-15 trout in a day with trout up to 28 inches. Not unusual for other areas in Florida but here in Key West this is exceptional. Maybe due to the harsh red tide conditions that the West coast of Florida experienced this year, the trout may have moved down to Key West. None the less we are certainly enjoying the bite and the folks that fish with are able to take with them plenty of nice tasty filets for lunch giving the snapper population a break.

The Backcountry Fishing Forecast

I see no changes in the weather for the foreseeable future. A mild winter is in store for us through the 14 day forecast period with temps in the high 60s to upper 70s every day and mostly Northerly winds for the next 10 days with the exception of a very mild cold front that will push through this weekend. This will continue our great Key West fishing.

Jack Crevale
The jack crevale have been crushing the baits this year offering our anglers a fun time Key West fishing.

With winds over 15 backcountry fishing will definitely be the way to go for folks wanting to avoid the higher seas of deep sea fishing here out of Key West. January gets super busy for us on our Key West backcountry fishing charters for exactly that reason.

Techniques We Use For Backcountry Fishing Key West

We use a multitude of techniques for catching fish in the backcountry. Spinning rods with 10-12lb test braided and monofilament line with soft baits and top water plugs seem to be the fan favorites. For weighted plastics drag through the grassy areas for trout, run fast in the mid water for jacks, lady fish and mackerel. Popping corks work well too to attract the trout bite with shrimp or imitation below. Check out some of our tools you can purchase on Amazon..
