February 24th 2019 – Balmy, sorta humid with tropical southern breezes is the best way to describe Key West weather this week. Very un February like and VERY not like the rest of the country that is under winter storm warnings. This is definitely the time you want to get to the Keys and enjoy some warm weather.

As the days draw closer to March the invasion of spring breakers will decent on Key West. The city is flourishing and lots of fun to be here with everyone else as refugees from the cold winter up North.

Fishing Report

The last week or so has been just awesome for all arenas of Key West fishing. Its been a bit breezy but nothing crazy. The warmer trends since our last cold fronts have brought us back to summer like fish species in our flats fishing, tarpon fishing and our deep sea fishing.

Inshore on the flats the permit and bonefish think that its a nice October. We are getting lots of shots at both on our shallow water missions. In the backcountry the tarpon fishing has lit up as well. Its typical we get a good run of tarpon this time of the year but seems to be this is a little more robust than usual. Our anglers here at Dream Catcher Charters have been getting a lot of tarpon action when they request it, even though we still do not say it is “Tarpon Season“. The trout bite has continued to be epic. Probably the most notable thing this year would be the trout bite here in Key West. Add that to our mackerel, jacks and snappers the backcountry fishing charters are still holding up as our number one way for folks to go fishing.

Offshore the reef has held up nicely with daily reports of nice sized yellowtail snappers and good king-fishing. On the deeper reef our Key West fishing guides have been getting some nice mutton snappers. Grouper season in the Atlantic is still closed. Deep sea fishing has been yielding our anglers Mahi mahi on most days, Black fin tunas on others and many wahoo were caught around the full moon. We have yet to see a super consistent sailfish bite here in our Key West deep sea fishing, But I am sure that will change soon enough.

Fishing Forecast

There is a little front coming through the Keys on Monday the 25th. It will be super mild mostly a wind switch then back to light and variable on Wednesday.

Inshore I expect things to remain the same. Permit and the occasional bonefish on the flats fishing days and loaded with tarpon, trout, jacks, sharks and lots of fun fish to catch in the backcountry. You really can’t go wrong fishing nearshore this time of the year. Its calm, pretty, and loads of fun catching.

Offshore will remain the same as well. As we wait for grouper season to open in May reef fishing for the snappers will have to keep us happy with nice fat yellowtails, muttons and mangrove snappers to get chilled in the box. When the winds go moderate in the middle of the week I expect things to heat right up with the deep sea fishing bite and usher in some big dolphin (Mahi mahi) and maybe the kick start to our sailfish season. The wahoo will taper off as the new moon approaches but other species will click on. Still a good bet for Key West fishing fun especially with the lighter winds.
