Tarpon In February
Its February the 8th.. Tarpon fishing in Key West.. Close by and hungry.
No, its not what we can call tarpon season but they are here for a limited engagement giving our anglers and fishing guides some much needed practice to brush off the cob webs of the off season with some nice fish…
Yesterday it was the last few minutes of the incoming tide that turned the tarpon on. We drifted baits through the mess and hook ups were galore. Before we left the dock we told our anglers that the tarpon were here but.. there were no guarantees as they can be finicky this time of the year.. On or Off.. well yesterday they were on and our anglers were presented with an incredible morning of tarpon fishing.
Today.. more of the same.. ( am report has 3 fish jumped one on the fight ) lots of fish around more later after incoming tide stops and outgoing tide starts..
February can be a hit or miss month on tarpon. Mostly it has to do with the weather this time of the year. A cold front can put them down and back out to the Gulf of Mexico and shut the bite down completely. Just to the contrast of that a nice humid warm day can bring them back just as fast. There is no way to predict the weather in order to book your best day, but there are SOO many other fish to fish for if the tarpon are not chewing…March has better odds for more consistent tarpon as the fronts approach it will only shut the fish down for a day or two. Much more consistent and we consider March to be the start of tarpon season here in Key West for Dream Catcher Charters..
To get on one of our backcountry fishing boats for a day of tarpon fishing or anything..
