Permit Fish Key West

A November permit caught with Capt. Tommy Z. flats fishing at Dream Catcher Charters

The cooling trend has continued to be steady with a few warmer days keeping our water temps in the lower 70s. The south wind we are seeing today will be gone tomorrow giving way to a cooler week with some more wind. The coming weekend should have some more potential for us down here. The last couple weeks have really opened up a few different fisheries for us and we are getting ready to do some winter fishing.

The reef fishing yellow tail bite has really been producing for us. Limits of yellow tail snapper are becoming more and more consistent. Mixed in with those guys are mutton snapper and cero mackerel. No need for chum on our reef shots, we have been very successful throwing plugs for the larger fish in 20-40 feet of water.

Inshore the trout bite has been getting more and more steady. We have been finding more numbers with some fish up to 25 inches. Soft plastics from Z-Man and MirroLure have been the key on the trout. We are all looking forward to getting into them on topwater baits soon. Also in the back country we are still finding some nice mangrove snapper and shallow water grouper. The bigger jacks have been swinging through providing a great time for our anglers on light tackle. The sharks are around in good numbers for a larger target. Common sharks include black tip, lemon, spinner and bonnet heads.

We are regularly finding permit and a few bonefish milling about up while flats fishing. Capt Tommy here at Dream Catcher Charters was able to get one of each earlier today on our Yellowfin tower boat. We aren’t expecting to find the bones for much longer. For more steady action in the shallows we have been finding the cudas packed up warming themselves in the sun. While they slow down right after a temperature snap, they seem to come around after a day or so. We like to sight fish them with hard baits or a fast moving fly.

Overall we are getting closer and closer to our winter patterns which can be a blast to fish. While there may be some wind in our future, we can get out and make the best of it. The days of going out and catching ten or more different species of fish are here and its only going to get better..

We are booking up for the month of December. Come get out of the cold. We promise you won’t see snow here in Key West. Just call Island Genn and she will hook you up with Me or any of my colleagues here at Dream Catcher Charters.
