February 7th 2017 – Its no secret winter so far has skipped over Key West like a game of duck duck goose. Mild temps in the upper 70s most days with very little rain and winds that change by the day from the North to the South with an occasional Westerly frontal feel.

Absolutely gorgeous is what I call this February so far. I have had the opportunity to get out on the water in my flats fishing boat on several occasions to do some poling in the shallows fly fishing for barracudas, sharks and permit. Its been really nice. I love a good day of poling the skiff with a fun client where we have good stuff to talk about till the next opportunity comes swimming by.

With this weather Flats fishing anglers can expect some incredible shots at permit and barracudas in the shallows. Don’t be afraid to get skinny especially in the top of the day when the water is warmest. These fish are foraging for some easy food targets and will eat the lure, fly or bait very well. I am sure there are some bonefish around mostly in the deeper waters of the backcountry but durring certain tide sets they will come up on the flats and feed like they do in October. I love this kind of winter..

Backcountry fishing is whatever you want to make of it. ITs WIDE OPEN.. Casting into the muds for trout, jacks, cobia, shark, ladyfish, pompano and snappers in the deeper basins. We can also use our MotorGuide Xi5 Trolling motors to get skinny with out state of the art Yellowfin Bay Boats to take some shots at the species we talked about on the flats.

Either way our inshore fishing Key West right now ROCKS! this time of the year and is being made especially good with the warmer winter.
