Tarpon Fishing Update
Tarpon fishing report and forecast for Key West
April 17th 2017 – We have fish! The tarpon fishing has been pretty steady this past week after that last moon. The tarpon are filling in nicely to offer our anglers loads of shots as long as our anglers want to keep trying for them. The larger tarpon are running 80 – 125lbs that we are seeing lately. the cooky cut 60lb fish are out there to entertain as well. Using all sorts of tackle to fish for tarpon we have noticed the live bait game being the strongest. On a tarpon fishing charter we always leave he dock loaded for whatever we may encounter so we usually have two live baits to chose from and a couple of stand by artificial that we know work without a question. The fish are still a little deep and the winds are still a bit strong out of the East so our fly fishing game is a bit limited due to the difficulty level of casting.
Tarpon Tip – Tarpon goes left.. you go right. With you rod tip that is. After all the flying and jumping is done, the fish is still hooked up and the business of getting the fish to the boat begins the rod angles you make from here on out will subtract – or – (painfully) add to the length of your battle. Your boat driver should have you pretty good and close to your tarpon after all the craziness happens. Here you can get your angles to make the most effect on his endurance. The tip is.. Don’t follow your tarpon He goes right, you take your rod tip to the left. All the added angle changes really wears the tarpon down. Whatever you do.. DO NOT just stand there and let him pace you with the same angle..
We have limited availability for tarpon fishing charters this week coming up. Don’t forget, June is an amazing month for tarpon fishing as well and a great time to be in Key West.
