Backcountry is Best Bet Windy Days

Key West backcountry fishing is the easy way to go wet a line.

January 10th 2020 – The last few days, almost the last week have been a struggle for anyone that owns a boat and loves to fish, let alone the fishing guides of Key West trying to make a living at it. The winds have Been epic.. One of the windiest January’s on record but oddly enough not cold or even chilly. Temps dipping to the high 60s and highs near 80 are not exactly wintry weather here in Key West.

Mutton Snapper
Often caught on our backcountry fishing charters Mutton Snappers are very good eating..

Backcountry Fishing Report

Backcountry fishing has been where its at here in the world of fishing in Key West. The really high winds have had everyone looking for refuge in and among the islands for calmer waters and a consistent bite.

Our 4 and 6 hour fishing charters to the backcountry and the flats have been our most popular, in fact our only trips out as of late. Our anglers have been experiencing steady action using artificial lures and live bait. Spotted sea trout have been the big hit lately. They offer a good food value and fun fight. Jacks are also very popular with our anglers as the pit bulls of the flats. We have Yellow jacks up to 15lbs and jack crevalle regularly in the 7 lb range. Mix those fish with the Spanish mackerel (also a good eating fish), blue runners and blue fish to make a well rounded day of rod bending lately. The bonus fish this week has been the mutton snapper. As it gets cooler the muttons come in to feed in the shallows. Makes for a nice lunch item.

Backcountry Fishing Forecast

As we pray for cooler weather the backcountry fishing will stay the same. If it cools off a good bit expect our species to grow with cobia and more snapper that come into the shallows to feed. The weather looks to be windy through Tuesday the 14th and maybe beyond. I do see a break next weekend where the winds are laying down for a day to usher in the next cold front which (by the computer models) looks like a doozy with winds up to 30 on Sunday Or Monday the 19, 20. This will help the bite in the backcountry for sure.

Its always a good bet that if you get seasick, love to fish, dont want to break the bank and enjoy casting and catching. The backcountry fishing charters are the best way to go for a nice day on the water, any day of the week.
