Key West Tarpon Fishing Report

Key West tarpon fishing report and forecast for March 2020

tarpon held by the jaw released in Key West Key West tarpon release to go fight another day.

March 1 2020 – One of the coldest days of the year here in Key West this morning with this late winter we are having. I woke up and it was 59 on my back porch looking over the water here in Sugarloaf Key just 15 miles from my office in Key West. I got a report earlier that the water temps in the backcountry have dipped to the mid 60s for the first time we have seen this year yet. One of our boats here at Dream Catcher Charters just reported they caught a tarpon today even in the cold.. Good news though, we are going to warm right back up and every day is one day closer to a consistent shot at tarpon here in Key West.

Tarpon Fishing Report

Last week our water temps were in the low 70s. With some spring like winds and good tides coming off the new moon our crew here at Dream Catcher Charters did have some pretty good tarpon action through the week in certain areas. Tarpon in the 25- 80 lb range were managed and our anglers were surprised with an out of season shot at some strong tarpon. Today as I mentioned one of our boats put a tarpon on the board, despite the cold. So thats really good news..

Tarpon Fishing Forecast

The weather will not keep cold for long.. As I write this the air temp has reached 70 and expected to hit 73 by mid day followed by near 80 tomorrow and higher the next day. This will warm things back up quickly. I would imagine that by Wednesday there will be some shots at tarpon here in Key West through the end of the week, before another front pushes through on Friday with strong North West winds and another chill down for next weekend.

Is It Tarpon Fishing Season Yet?

No. Not yet.. However Key West is a great destination for year round tarpon fishing and the captains at Dream Catcher Charters are really good at finding them when they are here and ready to eat.
