Hurricane Ian Has Lingering Affect For Backcountry Waters Off Key West

Hurricane IAN Hurricane IAN

Tuesday October 4th 2022 – It has been just 7 days since Hurricane Ian grazed Key West and Walloped South West Florida. The winds are back to normal with some Northerly in them. Fall is in the air as the humidity drops for the season. Today the islands of Key West are mostly cleaned up after the close call from this impressive and very destructive CAT 4 Hurricane. Key West received a good tossing around with just over hurricane forced winds and some storm surge. We were very blessed. 40 miles more Easterly in the track things would have been a disaster for us. We are always thinking about those that got hit hardest.

This was a brutal storm for the SW of Florida..

Backcountry Fishing Report

Here at Dream Catcher Charters we are back on line and fishing out of Key West with our clients.. We had a pretty busy day today with several backcountry fishing charters. The weather is nice – really nice. The water is still a bit turned up and my guys reported that there is surface grass EVERYWHERE.. Good news though, things are getting better and some of the fall species we count on this time of the year are starting to show up. The flats are getting better and better with each tide change..

Backcountry Fishing Forecast

As the tides clean up the backcountry the fishing will turn on strong. My experiences tell me that right after a storm most of our fish are pretty hungry. Being in the stirred up water makes it difficult to see. So once it clears up – and it will real soon – the fish will put on the feed bag and eat. As the water quality improved daily we will be in the hunt for bonefish, permit and juvenile tarpon on our backcountry and flats fishing charters. As the water cools off we will be catching trout, jacks and ladyfish. barracudas and sharks are loads of fun this time of the year as well.

October is a great time to go fishing In Key West. A great time to be here with lower humidity and less people till the end of the month. Flats fishing is incredible this time of the year.
