Key West Tarpon Season In Full Swing

The first week in May and the Key West tarpon season is in full swing. May has begun with some beautiful weather this week. Love it or hate it the full moon is at the end of this week and that will have its affect both good and bad. The ten-day forecast shows mixed winds little bit of a breeze coming through on the weekend then back to normal next week. Temps are down currently but that will soon change. All in all it looks like a perfect May for some great backcountry fishing for tarpon and many other species.

Fishing Report

Tarpon has been the focus of our inshore fishing trips here at Dream Catcher Charters. The last couple of weeks Fishing‘s been good. We are seeing a larger number of tarpon than we have in the last couple of years. The migration has begun and the fish are moving down the beaches in good numbers. Filling in the harbor and many of the channels and on the flats just like they should.

My Key West fishing trips I have been seeing great numbers of fish. Almost like the old days and they are hungry too. Eating Hogy Lures and live bait. After tarpon fishing I generally work the flats. The flats have been holding some large permit so my guess is they are back from spawning. In the shallows we have been seeing bonefish as well rounding out the grand slam. Last.. Sight fishing for barracudas have been an added bonus to keep up the excitement level when working the flats.

Just offshore our backcountry fishing bay boat trips have been hitting the snappers pretty good on the patch reefs putting together some nice lunches for the people that have been fishing with us. Yellowtail, mutton mangrove and lanes have all been part of the packages.

Backcountry Fishing Tarpon Charters

May is typically sold out pretty good for us here in Key West as our tarpon fishing is legendary. This year many fishing guides have some holes in the full time schedules. Not a bad thing for anglers looking to book last minute and still get on an amazing fish. What’s more? ROOM RATES ARE BACK TO NORMAL finally Key West has come off its high horse and high room rates to make being here a bit more affordable. This week is the Song Writers festival and rooms at some places are less than 200.00 a night, where as last year they were over 1000.00.
