Winds Are UP Go Backcountry Fishing

October 30th 2023 – These winds are just in time for Halloween as they are truly horrific for fishing. I kid but really! Its a mess.. A great time to go backcountry fishing. Fantasy Fest is finally over this year and the weather is a changing. Still warm however very breezy.

Fishing Report

The last week or so has been pretty blustery but we have been getting out for some good backcountry fishing without beating our people up. In the basins the trout have started to show up working in and around the mullet muds. With them are also some lady fish and Spanish mackerel. When the winds let up a bit we are able to get outside to the shallow patch reefs and do work on the mutton snappers, mangrove snappers and yellowtail snappers for the Hook and Cook Trip.. you hook em’ they cook em’..

On the flats we have some great barracuda fishing as they are pounding the daylights out of the loads of bait and we are starting to see some jacks showing up behind the rays. A great time to hunt for permit is in the wind, they get kinda cocky when the wind is blowing however the wind can also increase the casting hazard once again making the permit a challenging target. Bonefish are still acting like they do in September, all over the flats and in the shallows. We have been doing well on spotting them either sight fishing or chumming the flats to ease the challenge. Remember that before the first bad cold front the tarpon fishing will remain good for the juveniles – A great trip to go on if you love tarpon fishing.

Pro Tip: QWe just love the MirroLure Mirrodine for much of our casting in the backcountry.. Just about everything eats this lure. Affordable and durable in a few different sizes.

Key West Fishing Forecast

This week is gonna blow like it’s mad. Thursday will be epic at 30+ even backcountry fishing will suck in those conditions. As the winds start to lay up starting Friday we will get back out there and make it happen in 20-25 mph without taxing ourselves and still catch some fish. I expect the trout bite will only get better and the flats will be alive with predators looking for a snack now that they can see. Water temps will remain the same as there won’t be a chill so expect mid to upper 70s in the shallows. Overcast conditions will prevail through Monday then things start to get normal again. Next week looks very nice with moderate and normal winds..
