The winds of March are here. With a vengeance. A cold front blew through the Keys yesterday with a blustery push of North Westerly Winds and a bite in the air that we have not felt much of this winter. As we started to get ready this am for another round of fishing charters we took a survey to the present conditions and changes that were felt from the winter blast. Our water temps came down to about 68 degrees from the day before at 78 however quickly recovering by 1pm in the backcountry.

As our clients showed up this morning weary of the winds we told them this. yes, you will get spray, yes the fishing will be slower than yesterday, no there won’t be any tarpon caught and yes its chilly in the air with a morning temperature of 68 degrees. Even after that and telling them there would be no shame if they decided not to go (or charge) our anglers bit the proverbial bottom lip and off we went. 5 boats left the dock this am and it was blowing 25 – 30 with gusts at Sand Key Light at 32. 

The fishing was not bad at all. The jacks and trout were on their game to the North with many jacks in the 5 -12 lb range being caught at random. Lady fish and trout in the 16 – 24 inch size range were caught and many smiles came back to the dock after a half day of fishing here in Key West with the boys at Dream Catcher Charters.

The Forecast.. Hmm looks grim.. For the next week we have 25 to occasionally 30 MPH winds with a possibility of a lull sometime next week around thursday. Bad? – No not really. Unusual? – I wish.. The winds of March have plagued us for as long as I have been a captain (27 years now) and I am sure long before that. The winds are the norm here in Key West and all over Florida in March. NOT TO FRET.. when these winds clock around to the East we will have our beloved tarpon bite back and on track for our loyal anglers who come visit us year after windy Year here in Key West.

Offshore fishing can be a challenge in the winds of March, but.. thats when fishing is best.
