Christmas Reef Fishing

Amazing weather and amazing fishing rarely come together. Till Now.

December 23rd 2017 – You could not ask for better weather here in Key West for fishing or

black grouper

Reef fishing for black grouper. Key West grouper fishing season is closed from January till May.

doing just about anything this Christmas on our little island city. If I were someplace that was cold and miserable, Key West would be the top of my list for a place to go for perfect and I mean perfect weather. It looks like the great weather will hold out through Christmas week and in turn  the Key West fishing should continue to be amazing.

We have been really getting after it on the reef this past week fishing in Key West. Our reef fishing charters have been regularly putting folks on some nice dinner sized grouper, mutton snapper and

yellowtail snapper. Grouper up to 15lbs, muttons in the 8-12 lb range and the yellowtails have been

consistently larger from 1.5 -3 lbs. When you put a nice box together each person is allowed three grouper and 10 snappers.. Thats a lot of fish possible.

Now, if that is not enough. There is so much bait and the conditions are perfect for some amazing mackerel fishing as well. These fish are rocketing out of the water in pursuit of their prey and smashing any lure or live bait we put out. Mackerel make a great smoked fish and many folks use it for fish dip. Along side the mackerel in the hunt are the yellow jacks. The yellow jacks make great sashimi.

Mutton Snapper

The Tasty Mutton Snapper.. YUM! These fish can be caught all year round.

I truly love a great December for fishing like we have right now we get these kinds of Decembers about one every 5 years. The whole reef is really alive with activity and the winds are allowing us to get after the tasty critters that dwell within. Usually Christmas week can be really hot or really windy and cold. not so this week..

Getting out there after the great fishing on the reef is really easy this week. We still have some limited availability on board my 36ft Yellowfin “Too Intense” and I have some colleagues that are in the business and my office is happy to refer you to them as they have some availability for you in their schedule.

We have been truly blessed in a lot of ways this year here at Dream Catcher Charters. Since the storm our business has returned to normal and things are turning around. We would like to thank all of our great fishing clients for being there for us and coming down to get out with us to let us do what we do.
Merry Christmas Everyone
