The Year Of The Bonefish

Bonefish Key West A great Year

bonefish

August 1st 2018 – Key West is not the first place that comes to mind for many anglers for bonefishing but this year we might be able to add to our resume due to the numerous about of bonefish we are seeing and catching here on our Key West fishing charters at Dream Catcher Charters.

A nice Key West bonefish my angler caught fishing Key West with me.

Bonefish are funny creatures. Here at Dream Catcher Charters we have caught them in 90 ft of water and 9 inches of water. During the winter when they leave the flats we often catch them a few places that are about 20ft deep as a by catch when fishing for trout, ladyfish and pompano. That has always been a consistent thing for us but not really a fishery that we like to promote. Here at DCC I like to keep the promotion of our bonefishing on the flats, in the shallows where its traditionally supposed to be. This year we have a good number of bonefish around on the flats and our anglers have had lots of shots in the past weeks making for a good time after tarpon fishing and along the way while looking for the elusive permit. We are seeing fish up to 8lbs on the flats this summer so far and I expect they will get bigger into October.

We do offer bonefishing charters for up to 3 persons on either a traditional flats fishing skiff or a shallow bay boat, what ever an angler desires or the number he decides to bring along dictates. For conservation purposes we will not target any more than one fish per angler to be released on a given spot. Having this number of bonefish here out of Key West is a real treat and we want to preserve them as well as encourage them to stick around.

The water temps have dropped considerably in the backcountry and on the flats in the last few days. I expect this trend to continue as the tropical rain storms keep things cooled off. We are seeing 83-86 degrees out there and thats just about perfect. We fish for bonefish using fly fishing gear and spin fishing with Artificial and bait.

Bonfishing trips are popular this time of the year. Add this to tarpon and flats fishing and see what the Key West area is famous for. We do 4 6 and 8 hour backcountry and flats fishing charters every day of the year. The summer and fall are exceptional times to be in Key West with lesser expensive room rates and expansive water with no one around.
