Yesterday I was out on the troll myself on board my 36Ft Yellowfin Just South West of Key West. I worked from 200 to about 400 ft with mixed results on a half day. Bonitos galore with some very toothy barracudas hitting the deeper baits was keeping our morning entertained till I ran into a color change that launched its way to the South with huge mats of grass jammed up on the clean edge. Off in the distance we saw our first of many frigates working the edge. Underneath each one of the frigates was a pair of dolphin zipping along and ready to eat. We compounded on this opportunity and sight casted our way to a really fun day as these fish marched down the edge. This was what we needed to finish off our day.

Key West Deep Sea Fishing Report

Lets talk Key West fishing.. The last cold front really stirred things up. Dirty water all between Key West and the reef with a fine combed edge of a color change that moves in and out with the tide. Just before Christmas we had an epic NW wind at 35 for about a day followed by some stiff North Easterlies yesterday that will be followed up by a hard Easterly tomorrow and Thursday. Its gonna be sporty out there Wednesday, Thursday with a calming trend starting Friday the 28th making this weekend and all of next week an amazing stretch of great Key West deep sea fishing weather..

Other reports were of the occasional great day of dolphin fishing on the South East winds and blackfin tuna hit or miss around Key West here in the past week. I thought that during the full moon we would hear of more wahoo stories but so far the buzz is light. Still waiting for the typical winter sailfish push to come along down the reef. So far its been pretty quiet there too, but Im sure not far from being a thing.

Deep Sea Fishing Forecast

Heading toward New Years the weather looks like it is setting up for some summer like patterns.. That, coupled with the dynamic dolphin fishing we are already experiencing, it is my guess that the dolphin will, again be the showcase for my report just after New Years. South East winds will prevail through at least Thursday the 3rd with winds being light around 10-15 mph — Perfect…. I highly recommend a Key West deep sea fishing charter during this time for some tasty dolphin (mahi mahi) and blackfin tunas. Who knows if the sailfish decide to show it might be a week for fishing that might make the books.
