May Brings Great Fishing

May fishing report for Key West.

Black Grouper

May 5th 2019 – We went right from winter into summer type patterns it seems here in Key West. We skipped the windy parts of March and April and moved right to the hot and humid parts of late May. We have already had a drive by with one little tropical system that went up the East Coast last week and brought us some scattered showers but things seem to be getting steady for the next few weeks for us to knock out some great fishing.

Offshore Reef fishing and Deep Sea Fishing

Grouper season has opened as of May 1 and we are catching them pretty good. Red grouper, black grouper and deeper yellow edge groupers are all part of the mix. Don’t forget the snappers too. May is one of my favorite months for snapper fishing for big mangrove and yellowtails with some nice muttons too. Lets face it.. Good weather, open season grouper and the snapper bite makes the reef fishing one of the best places to be. Last note for entertainment value, the permit are still on the reef and wrecks for some light tackle fun..

Permit Fish
Rebecca is holding up a nice permit she fought in the pouring rain fishing with Capt. Steven Lamp at Dream Catcher Charters.

Deep sea fishing is killing it as well. Mahi Mahi with sailfish and wahoo. What more do you want.. Oh Wait.. two boats last week almost got a billfish grand slam of White, blue marlin and sailfish.. So.. Good weather, good fishing makes deep sea a great place to be as well.

Tunas in the Gulf are usually pretty good this time of the year behind the shrimp boats. Its not been great. a few trips out there in the last week have blanked..

Backcountry Fishing Flats Fishing

Key West Tarpon fishing is the main focus out back in the shallows and channels. The flats fishing has been very good for bonefish and some permit with a good number of barracudas to cast to.

Fishing Charters

May has become without a doubt the busiest month ever for Key West fishing Charters. Backcountry fishing for tarpon is the most poplular with the greatest number of trips. People are realizing that our best weather / fishing is May – August. Call us to see what availability is for your fishing charter. Now is a good time to book for next year..
