Tarpon Report Key West

Tarpon Jumping Tarpon Time IN January

May 19th 2013 – Mid May report for tarpon fishing in Key West.

The migration is doing well. The path this year is a bit different than we have seen in the years past. The tarpon are on the beaches pushing along like always but not in huge numbers. We are actually finding our huge numbers of hungry fish in a strange place and boy are they hungry tarpon.

Great shots at numerous fish are possible here in Key West especially tarpon fishing with the captains at Dream Catcher Charters. These guys have been in it for 2 trips a day every day.

Artificial lures the tarpon are eating the bagley finger mullet, Hogy lure (white and black) and the MirrOlure Lumo Serries as well as the MirrOlure Catch 2000. In the AM I prefer the white and red colors on my plugs and later in the day a darker color wins…

Fly fishing has been “ok” many fish eating flys all day but the tarpon are not as numerous in the shallows as the years past.. I think this will all improve later in the month.

Live bait is still king for sight fishing for tarpon. We are using mullet, pin fish and crabs (when we can get them).

The weather is holding up well. The moon phase is between a new and full moon today with good (decent) tides. Already reporting in this am is Capt. Kyle Kelso here at Dream Catcher Charters tarpon fleet with a 100+ lb slob hooked up and wearing his angler out.

Tarpon fishing charters are in huge demand.. Call Island Genn and find out how you can get on the books with a good tarpon fishing guide here in Key West, last minute.. She knows all the fishing guides worth fishing with and their schedules.
