Fishing Report For Key West
February 24th 2014 – The weather has contented to be better than nice. Temps in the upper 70’s and low 80’s have warmed our backcountry and flats waters and made the offshore fishing look like summer.
Februarys like this come along about every 5 years or so here in Key West. Where the people up north are getting slammed by snow and cold and we are down here with our toes in the sand putting on sunscreen and looking for air conditioning or somewhere to cool off at the top of the day. This is one of those years.
Here at Dream Catcher Charters we are welcoming in our newest boat the Yellowfin INXS “Spider”. In a tradition of keeping the nicest fleet of boats to be seen anywhere we really went all out on this boat as usual. Look for a complete article with photography coming soon. We just splashed her yesterday and I have to say, I really had a blast running her.
Now, On to the fishing
I started off with flats fishing because February is my favorite winter month for flats fishing here in Key West and this February has been no slouch. Permit are my favorite fish to fish for in February. We have seen some really nice fish up on the flats tailing away looking for a snack. what a sight to see poling along the flat and “ding” theres the fin, then the tail of a nice slob permit working out his morning meal. To compliment the permit the ocean side bonefish are around and then there are the tarpon in the area. (see the backcountry section of this report for tarpon news).
Folks don’t hesitate to book a flats fishing trip here in Key West this time of the year. The experience is awesome and the fishing is incredible.
Those of you that read my reports religiously know that I always say backcountry fishing is the way to go in the winter for more species than you can count. Well its true.. We have been slaying the fish daily here. You name it we are game for it. Permit on the flats are easy to target from our bay boats as well as barracudas, sharks, jacks and late cobia. In the bays we are still smashing the large trout, lady fish, jacks, sharks, grouper and snapper. Pack a lunch its a lot of fishing.
Most of our fishing charters are backcountry trips.

Offshore Wrecks, Reefs, Deep Sea
Generally February can be a windy month for us here in Key West. earlier this week it was sporty but not tragic. The deep sea guys got out on the South Easterly flow of wind and compounded with some sailfish and dolphin. A usual cast of characters. Deep dropping has been productive as well with nice catches of snowy grouper, tile fish and golden tiles. The wrecks always hold nice sized amber jacks this time of the year and we have seen catches up to 80lbs.. Whew, thats a fight! Check out our Deep Sea Fishing charter Fleet.
Deep sea, wreck and reef fishing trips are similar but different fishing charters. Rates vary depending on your group and what you would like to do. Give us a call and we will go over all of your options to ensure the best day for you and your group…
