Tarpon Fishing Report For Key West
February 26th 2014 – Unseasonably warm conditions prevail and the bite has been decent for the anglers going tarpon fishing with Dream Catcher Charters here in Key West.
Tarpon season in Key West as we all know comes in March (ish). It can start earlier or later depending on Old Man Winters egress into summer. Well this year has been very interesting. If I had to guess I would say that February average temp has been about 75 degrees this month. Thats not just warm for winter its almost too hot.
Water temps have been hovering in the upper 70’s in the backcountry waters here off of Key West. The tarpon are here and feeding on copious amounts of natural bait. Moving around with the tides often times when we see groups of them they seem busy, almost like they are rushing around to find someplace to hang out. Then there are those moments when we have happy fish and the bite is on.
February is not traditionally a tarpon season time for us. However, that said, we are catching them. The bite is inconsistent at best. Each and every morning that we are scheduled to go fishing we discuss with our clients the possibilities of fishing for tarpon on that specific day based on what we have been seeing. No promises but we sure give it hell and see what we can do without wasting our clients day on the water chasing a winter tarpon.
Tarpon Fishing Forecast..
It seems that the Polar Vortex is leaving the South alone. If we have this sort of weather continue for the next few weeks ( I see no reason it won’t) we will be in the tarpon on a super strong bite by the middle of March.
We have some availability for March but it is closing out fast. Call Island Genn to see about your day on the water with the talented captains of Dream Catcher Charters.
