January 20 2016 – The cold fronts have arrived and the water temps are plummeting. Air temps dipping down into the upper 50s at night are making some changes in Key West fishing. Another front is approaching this coming weekend making things a little tougher in some areas and easier in others.

Deep Sea Fishing Key West – the boats are still getting off the docks and making a good day of it. Sailfish, blackfin, tunas and wahoo are the talk of the fleet this week.

Reef and Wreck fishing – The colder the better in some instances for reef fishing. The baitfish move right up on the reef followed by hungry predators.  Higher winds certainly mean larger waves and tougher fishing conditions. You will earn it. There are some great opportunities for very large yellowtail snappers, mutton snappers, cero mackerel, and king mackerel on the reef.

Backcountry Fishing – Water temps this morning dipped to 58 degrees – 4 degrees colder than yesterday. Good news the waves are not so big and the boat ride not bumpy. Fishing is a little slow in the mornings but we are still managing some nice catches of large jacks, snappers and pompano. Fishing the afternoon bite is certainly best. Flats Fishing

the barracudas are huddled up close getting adjusted to the cooler temps and not eating well. The water is banged up (dirty) from the wind so sight casting is tough today. Tomorrow winds lay down and temps come up this will encourage a bite and clean water. Every day is a mystery.

Rounding out the report. If you want a nice day on the water and not get beaten up or seasick look for your backcountry options in the afternoon. For a good shot at sailfish tuna or wahoo I can recommend the deep sea fishing. Reef fishing is productive just make sure your in a nice sized 30+ foot center console to manage the sea conditions.
