Fishing for tarpon last week in Key West Capt. Brian (goose) got into a nice fish with his anglers.

January 24th 2017 – The blow from this past weekend seems to be subsided this morning and our boats are back on the water after a mother nature scheduled day off yesterday. It was a bit crazy with winds pushing 37 mph in gusts from the NW, our worst and most unfriendly tarpon fishing wind.. Today winds are a light 12 or so From the North and temps remain in the mid 70s so it was not too tragic. Whats crazy is that here we are in the last weeks of January and talking about when I think the tarpon will show back up.

Its all a matter of calming down. In my 22 years as a professional Key West tarpon fishing guide I have been watching Key West become a year round tarpon fishery. Never more evident than this year as the winter of 17′ still holds tarpon in the back bays and estuaries that are ready to eat and thrill our anglers. The tough part as a Key West fishing guide is planning on catching a tarpon with our anglers. People call after they see the amazing photos of us catching tarpon last week and they ask for a tarpon fishing charter next week. I had to disappoint and always tell folks that we cannot / will not guarantee that they will have a shot at a tarpon in January although it may happen. So my point is, we cannot count on it because officially January and February is NOT tarpon fishing season here in Key West not matter what anomaly occurs.

So. That said.. I expect that this week the tarpon should show back up. I am betting on some shots for my anglers on Thursday and Friday for some shots at channel fish that are just being able to see again after the water got all banged up from the blow. Then.. Saturday we have a cold front without all the winds to chill our temps to the mid to low 60s this will certainly put the brakes on the tarpon fishing and have an effect on the bite in a negative way.. Remember its not tarpon season.. yet. Winds next week look like they will be 15 or better all week…

The extended forecast for tarpon looks grim right on through till the first week in February. Hopefully I am wrong but I don’t want anyone planing a vacation or a fishing charter in Key West for tarpon based off my report and feel misled. After that my crystal ball is not seeing anything so we will just have to wait.

Tarpon Season 2017 is just around the corner.
