Key West Fishing Report
Key West Fishing Report From Capt. Steven Lamp at Dream Catcher Charters in Key West At Sunset Marina.
June 24th 2017 – Boy what an unusually windy month it has been here in Key West as well as the rest of the Florida Keys. Seems like 15-20 is the wind of the season. Sure its keeping things cool and turned up but enough is enough. The fishing has not stopped for us here at Dream Catcher Charters. We are running nearly sold out every day and still showing folks a great time on the waters here off of Key West fishing, sight seeing and snorkeling. Doing what we do.
The fishing report looks allot like this. With the prevailing winds the offshore deep sea fishing bite off of Key West is best done on the larger sport fishing boats that we have available to get you out there. The dolphin bite has been excellent and as good as many remember for a long time, not a lot of big fish but lots of them. Along with a great dolphin bite the wahoo show up suddenly just about at any time to surprise anglers with a screaming run and tasty dinner. Wahoo up to 60lbs are being reported South of Key West. Sparse are the sailfish and marlin although a few have been caught.. So that leaves us with the ham and eggs of deep sea fishing mahi-mahi. In my opinion, even as bumpy as it can be out there in the SE and E winds one of your better choices this time of the year for fishing out of Key West.

Lets move to the back. The Key West backcountry fishing that is. The tarpon are still here and in good numbers. They can be a little finicky during the day but morning and evening bites are strong. Shark fishing is excellent in the summer with sharks up to 400 lbs in the shallows sight fishing. The other summer time cast of characters would be the jacks and barracudas. really good times to be had by all on the backcountry trips. The number one way to avoid bumpy sea conditions and still catch lots of fun fish.

Getting skinny this time of year will not disappoint. Flats fishing in Key West is just now kicking off. Bonefish are seemingly everywhere and pretty easy to target on a bay boat or flats fishing skiff. Permit are right on schedule with great tailing fish and lots of shots just like June should have. With the new moon this week the permit are hunting the flats pretty hard and getting in areas they don’t normally look for food in the larger tides. I have always said, large tides are like a dinner bell to a permit and a safe day on the flats to them. Barracudas are a load of fun to fish for on the flats as well with top waters and the fly fishing rod.

Back offshore out to the reef. The reef fishing, Its windy, did you get that part? Long runs or anchoring make for a really long day out there. We do a lot of drifting and trolling for grouper during the winds to keep things moving. The breeze will certainly keep it cooler out there while you are filling the box with grouper and snapper. Last week I was able to get offshore for some great reef fishing with some regular clients of mine and we go into some nice red grouper and big yellowtail snappers for a great box of fish after a nice long day. Picking your day is the key. Looks like this week coming up Tuesday and Wednesday will be our better days. The fishing has been worth the runs and the winds. Keep in mind, if you get seasick its a long run back.
Throughout the forecast period it looks like we have 15+ MPH winds through next Monday the 3rd. Some rain in the forecast for the mid to end of this coming week. Dont pay attention to the rain so much. Its the tropics, It rains. July is getting super busy as we move toward the middle of summer. Have questions about any of it. CALL US. or Text us..
