Inshore Fishing – Hot And Worth It!

Flats and Backcountry fishing are at their peak here in Key West.

permit

Ice Man guided this angler to a very nice permit on the flats. Key West Flats fishing is red hot this week.

If you can stand the heat we have the fishing for you. With overly balmy conditions, little rain and some heat indexes over 100 degrees the fishing is as hot as the weather in shore – If you hit it right.

Inshore On the flats fishing and in the backcountry fishing get it done early. Tarpon are still in the harbor eating pretty well up to about 10 am. There are some fish still laying up in the shallows and the shrimp hatches will go on all the way through the fall. Lots of food around and the tarpon are there to compound on it. Fly fishermen will love the flat calm conditions we are having but, the cast will need to be even longer. Live bait and artificial are the way to go for good success. Working on presentation is key for the calm clear waters.

There are some nice permit to be found on the flats in the shallows. Here in Key West the permit is a holy grail fish. Very spooky but what a fun fish to stalk on the flats and they may for a great photo once it happens. Live crabs are the best bet as usual if they can be found. Short supply is usually the case island wide here in Key West. We always have crabs here at Sunset Marina where where all of the Dream Catcher Charters go out of.

Key West bonefishing has come back. After a cycle of a couple years of slower bonefish seasons we have bounced back to our great numbers of these speedy fish that put smiles on the face of our anglers. Our bonefishing charters are for all ages and experience levels. We fish for them allot this time of the year. You can either use a traditional flats fishing skiff and be poled to success by your guide or we can put you on one of our state of the art bay boats to show you a great day of bonefishing.

Yellowtail snapper

Nice yellowtail snapper Brian fishing with Capt. Steven of Dream Catcher Charters on board a 24ft Yellowfin Bay Boat.

Other fun stuff to do in the backcountry is the shark fishing and barracudas that lay on the flats this time of the year ready to pounce on a fast moving or bloody bait.  Nothing ever gets you prepared for the strike of a barracuda on the flats. They seem to come out of nowhere and just BLAST your bait.. Its very exciting..

Our backcountry fishing charters and our flats fishing charters are all the same rate for 2 anglers. You can chose a traditional flats fishing boat or one of our state of the art bay boats for a more stable fishing platform. Give us a call and we will explain the difference. We also offer reef fishing this time of the year on our bay boats to open up the versatility in your day. Our goal is your fun day on the water fishing in Key West.
